Exaltation
A planet is exalted when it stands in the sign where it is raised to honour, such as the Sun in Aries or Jupiter in Cancer, with one degree in that sign marking its peak. Astrologers read an exalted planet as a guest of high rank: admired, confident, often at its most idealistic, but living in a house that belongs to someone else.
A planet treated as a distinguished guest, lifted up and at its most hopeful, in a sign it does not own.

What exaltation means
The Greek term is hypsoma, a height. Where domicile makes a planet the owner of a sign, exaltation makes it a guest of honour in a sign ruled by another planet. It is placed at the head of the table and admired, but the house still runs on the host's rules. Lilly scored exaltation at four points, one below domicile.
Unlike domicile, exaltation names a degree as well as a sign. The planet is exalted anywhere in that sign, and the named degree is where its honour is greatest. These degrees probably go back to Babylonian astronomy. Ptolemy later explained some of the signs by the seasons: the Sun is exalted in Aries because daylight grows after the spring equinox, and Saturn in Libra, the sign where daylight starts to shrink, because it is the cold planet.
The exaltation table with degrees
| Planet | Sign | Degree of exaltation |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Aries | 19° |
| Moon | Taurus | 3° |
| Mercury | Virgo | 15° |
| Venus | Pisces | 27° |
| Mars | Capricorn | 28° |
| Jupiter | Cancer | 15° |
| Saturn | Libra | 21° |
The table has a symmetry worth noticing. The Sun and Saturn are exalted in opposite signs, as are Mars and Jupiter, and Mercury and Venus. Only the Moon has no partner across the zodiac. Mercury is the one planet that is both ruler and exalted in the same sign, Virgo. Five signs (Gemini, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Aquarius) host no exaltation of the seven planets.
How to read an exalted planet
Read the planet at its most optimistic and most public. Jupiter in Cancer gives generosity that feels like family care; Venus in Pisces gives love that forgives easily and finds beauty in what others pass over. People tend to notice these planets and credit them.
Two cautions help. First, an exalted planet is a guest, so look at the host. Mars in Capricorn depends on Saturn, Capricorn's ruler, and a strained Saturn makes this ambitious Mars work against more resistance. Second, exaltation can promise more than it delivers. The tradition sometimes describes it as reputation running ahead of substance, so an exalted planet in a weak house may show its ideals more than its results.
The closer the planet stands to its exact degree, the more strongly astrologers read the exaltation. The Moon at 3° Taurus is a textbook case; the Moon at 28° Taurus is still exalted, with less emphasis.
Outer planet exaltations
The classical table covers only the seven visible planets. When Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were added to modern astrology, writers proposed exaltations for them too, and these remain disputed. Uranus is often placed in Scorpio. Neptune has been given Cancer, Leo or Pisces depending on the author, and Pluto Aries, Leo, Scorpio or Pisces. None of these has the long tradition behind the seven classical exaltations, and no degrees are agreed.
Vedic astrology uses the same exaltation signs for the seven planets, with some degrees shifted (the Sun's deepest exaltation there is 10° Aries). It also gives exaltations to the lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu, which Western tables do not.
Exaltation in example charts
Mars in Capricorn: the drive is disciplined, strategic and patient. Effort is spent on long goals rather than on passing quarrels, and the person often earns respect for steady work under pressure.
Venus in Pisces: affection is generous and imaginative. Boundaries may need conscious attention, since this Venus gives freely and expects the best of people.
Sun at 19° Aries: the exact degree. Initiative and self-belief come naturally, and the person may be seen as a leader before they claim the role.
Saturn in Libra: discipline turns toward fairness, contracts and agreements kept. Saturn's sternness is softened by a strong sense of what each party owes the other.
Mercury in Virgo: both domicile and exaltation at once, the only such case in the table. Thinking is exact and practical, and the person often becomes the one others ask to check the details.
