Historic placement ♇ ♊

Pluto in Gemini

Pluto was in Gemini from the early 1880s until 1914; the data this site uses opens in 1900, so it shows the cohort's last years, 1900 to 1914. Practically no one alive today has the placement. Astrologers read it, in hindsight, as the generation that grew up while the telephone, wireless, mass newspapers, the car and the aeroplane changed how people spoke, learned and travelled.

The planet of buried power in the sign of the messenger: a generation whose world was remade by new ways to talk and move.

Pluto's pressure in Mercury's mutable air

Gemini is mutable air ruled by Mercury: speech, writing, trade, siblings, short trips and the nervous quickness of the mind. Pluto adds compulsion and the urge to reach what is hidden. Astrologers read Pluto in Gemini as information that becomes power, and as a mind that cannot leave a question alone until it reaches the bottom.

Pluto holds no dignity in Gemini, classical or modern. Mercury, the dispositor, carries most of the weight, so in any individual chart from these years the condition of Mercury told astrologers how this Pluto worked.

The people born from the 1880s to 1914

Pluto entered Gemini between 1882 and 1884 and left for Cancer in 1914, after crossing back and forth over the boundary from 1912. Within the window this site computes, the cohort runs from 1900 to 1914. Its members grew up as the telephone spread into offices and homes, wireless messages crossed oceans, cheap newspapers reached millions and cinema arrived. Cars came onto ordinary roads, and in 1903 the first powered aeroplane flew. In 1905 the theory of relativity changed how physicists thought about space and time.

Astrologers see Gemini in the speed of it all. They also see the shadow: the same cohort reached adulthood in the First World War, the first war fought with mass propaganda, and many of them died in it.

A Mercurial Pluto read after the fact

Pluto was discovered in 1930, while the youngest of this generation were teenagers, so its meaning for them is a reading made afterwards. Classical astrology gives Gemini to Mercury as its day house and gives the air triplicity to Saturn by day and Mercury by night, with Jupiter participating. None of these belongs to Pluto.

Evolutionary astrologers set Sagittarius, the opposite sign, as the growth point: from collecting facts to finding what they mean. In tarot Pluto is linked with Judgment and Gemini with The Lovers, the card of choice and of two voices meeting. Read together they suggest a generation that faced choices about what to believe, made in a world that suddenly talked much louder.

From 1900 Pluto was already past 10° Gemini. Births to 1905 fall in the second decan, Mars's face, whose Golden Dawn card is the Nine of Swords; from 1903 on the third decan, the Sun's face, under the Ten of Swords. Astrologers note how hard both cards are.
