Locomotive
A locomotive chart has its planets spread over about 240° of the zodiac with one empty third, about 120°. In Marc Edmund Jones's system it is the shape of self-driven momentum: a person who keeps moving toward goals and works hard to fill what feels missing. The planet at the front of the group sets the direction.
A long train of planets with an empty third ahead of it, giving steady momentum and a strong will to get somewhere.

What the locomotive shape is
Marc Edmund Jones's seven chart shapes describe how the planets spread around the wheel. In the locomotive they cover two-thirds of it, in a broad, even band, and leave one third empty. The image is a train with an engine at the front, pulling the rest along a track.
Jones linked this shape to drive and momentum. The empty third works like the space ahead of the engine: it pulls the person forward and gives them a feeling that something remains to be done. Astrologers read the locomotive as a practical, self-propelled temperament.
The rule: about 240° filled, one third empty
The rule is planets spread over about 240° with an empty third. Jones counted the ten planets from the Sun to Pluto. The empty arc should be roughly a trine, 120°, with the planets distributed along the occupied part without one tight cluster dominating.
The leading planet is the key. It is the planet at the front of the train as the wheel turns clockwise in daily motion, standing at one edge of the empty third. Jones treated it as the engine: its nature shows what drives the person, its sign how, and its house where the drive is directed. A Mars engine pushes through competition, a Mercury engine through ideas and communication, a Saturn engine through patient, disciplined work.
The planet at the other edge of the empty third, at the back of the train, is sometimes read as a trailing point that carries the past along. The houses inside the empty third show the area of life the person keeps reaching for. Like every Jones shape, the locomotive is judged by zodiacal longitude alone, so the house system never changes it; the angles only decide which houses the empty third covers.
How a locomotive feels from inside
Life with a locomotive often feels like steady forward motion. You set goals, reach them and set more, and stopping can feel uncomfortable. The empty third gives a recurring sense that something is still missing. Its houses tell you what: a gap in the 4th, 5th and 6th might show as restlessness around home, pleasure and routine, while a gap across the 10th, 11th and 12th might make public standing and retreat feel unfinished.
Others may see you as tireless, sometimes as pushy. You may be the person who keeps a group project moving.
What the engine gives
The locomotive gives executive power. With planets across two-thirds of the chart, the person has resources in many areas and the drive to put them to work. They can organise, persist and carry projects through obstacles. The shape favours practical achievement: a goal, a plan and the stamina to follow it. The leading planet often develops into a strong personal signature.
Where the train runs too hard
Momentum can turn into compulsion. The sense of something missing may never be satisfied, and the person can keep pushing long after a goal is met. They may drive others at their own speed and lose patience with slower people. Rest feels unproductive. A leading planet in poor condition can make the drive erratic or misdirected.
Working with a locomotive chart
Find the empty third and the leading planet at its edge. Study the engine planet's sign, house and aspects, since they describe what powers you. Read the houses in the empty third as the area you are working toward and decide what would count as enough there. Build rest into your plans, treating it as maintenance for the engine. When transits move through the empty third and reach the leading planet, expect new starts.
