Hematite

Hematite is iron oxide, and its defining trick is that whatever colour the specimen looks, the powder it leaves when dragged across unglazed porcelain is deep blood red. That is where its name comes from, from the Greek for blood, and it explains everything the traditions attached to it. Finely divided, it is red ochre, the oldest pigment in human use.

What it actually is

Iron oxide, Fe2O3, trigonal, hardness 5.5 to 6.5, with no cleavage but distinct parting.

The streak test is the identifying feature and it is genuinely striking: polished hematite looks like dark metal, and dragged across unglazed porcelain it leaves a deep red line. That is because finely divided hematite is red, and the massive metallic appearance is a bulk optical effect.

Hematite occurs in several habits: specularite with a micaceous sparkle, kidney ore in botryoidal masses, tabular crystals sometimes called iron roses, and massive material.

It is the principal ore of iron and the reason the Iron Age was possible at industrial scale.

Hematite is only weakly magnetic. Anything that sticks strongly to another piece is not hematite.

Where it comes from

Brazil, Australia and China dominate world iron ore production, most of which is hematite from banded iron formations, sedimentary rocks that record the oxygenation of the oceans over two billion years ago.

Britain's Cumbria produced fine kidney ore and specular hematite, and Elba's deposits supplied Etruscan and Roman iron.

Switzerland's Alpine fissures produce the iron rose crystals prized by collectors.

Ochre, which is hematite-bearing clay, has been quarried worldwide for at least a hundred thousand years, and specific ochre sources were traded over long distances in prehistory.

The Blombos Cave in South Africa preserves an ochre-processing workshop using abalone shells, dated to around a hundred thousand years ago, with evidence of a repeated recipe.

What the traditions claimed

Red ochre is the oldest documented symbolic material anywhere. It appears in burials across every inhabited continent, packed around bodies, and in rock art from the Palaeolithic onwards. Nobody knows what it meant to the people who used it, but the association between red iron mineral and the continuation of life is the earliest symbolic act we can trace.

The name comes from the Greek haima, blood, recorded by Theophrastus and Pliny, and classical sources credit hematite with staunching bleeding and with protecting soldiers, which is a doctrine of signatures argument built directly on the streak.

Roman soldiers reportedly rubbed themselves with hematite for invulnerability, and Mesopotamian sources use it in amulets and as a material for cylinder seals and weights.

Medieval lapidaries following Marbode repeat the blood claims and add that it settles legal disputes.

Modern practice reads it as a grounding stone, on the strength of its weight and its metallic darkness.

How it is worked with

Weight is what hematite offers and it is a genuine physical property: it is noticeably denser than it looks, and a tumbled piece in a palm registers differently from a quartz pebble of the same size.

That makes it the best stone in the catalogue for a simple grounding practice, where the object is to have something with real presence in the hand.

At hardness 5.5 to 6.5 it takes daily wear reasonably, though the mirror polish scratches and dulls over time and it can rust if kept damp.

Do not use it for gem waters, which will discolour and can rust it.

If you want the tradition rather than the modern reading, ochre is the interesting route: hematite is the pigment humans have used longest, and drawing with it is a more direct connection to that history than carrying a polished bead.

Buying it honestly

The single most common misrepresentation in the whole crystal trade is magnetic hematite.

Natural hematite is only weakly magnetic and will not stick to another piece or hold a paperclip. The magnetic bracelets, beads and tumbled stones sold as hematite are manufactured barium or strontium ferrite ceramic, sometimes called hematine. It is a perfectly reasonable product and it is not a mineral, and it is sold as hematite constantly.

If it sticks, it is not hematite.

Beyond that, hematite is cheap and rarely faked. Some material is coated to produce rainbow effects.

Genuine hematite can be confirmed by the streak test on unglazed porcelain: it leaves a deep red line whatever the specimen looks like.

Watch for pyrite and magnetite sold as hematite, both of which streak differently.

Handle with care

Stable and safe to handle, but it can rust at the polish if kept damp. Do not use it for gem waters. Not toxic. Its dust, like any mineral dust, should not be inhaled.
