The clear & white ray

Where the association came from

Clear stone is odd, and people noticed. Rock crystal is cold to the touch and stays cold, which led Greek writers including Pliny to conclude it was ice frozen so hard it could no longer melt; the Greek word krystallos meant both. That mistaken etymology gave us the English word crystal for every mineral, whether or not it is transparent.

The other observable fact is that clear stone does things to light. A rock crystal sphere concentrates sunlight enough to start a fire, a use recorded in Rome and in Han China, and later used to light sacred flames. Iceland spar, the clear form of calcite, splits an image in two when you look through it, which is strange enough on a first encounter to demand an explanation. Once a material both refuses to warm and visibly bends the world behind it, the folklore writes itself.

What the traditions claimed

In Mesopotamia and Egypt clear rock crystal was strung as beads and carved into small vessels for kohl and oils, valued for holding no colour of its own beside stones that did. It appears in the Egyptian record from the Predynastic period onward, cut into eyes for statues, where a clear inlay over white catches light like a living pupil.

The scrying tradition is the one that carried furthest. John Dee's shewstone, now in the British Museum, is a polished sphere of smoky quartz rather than the transparent crystal ball of the stage magician, but the practice is the same: gazing into a translucent surface until the mind supplies images. Renaissance manuals treat it as a technique with rules about light, timing and the condition of the scryer, and it survived into nineteenth-century parlour occultism largely intact.

Modern practice added the two claims that dominate today. The first is amplification, the idea that clear quartz strengthens whatever it is placed beside. The second is programming, the idea that a clear stone can be given an intention and hold it. Both are twentieth-century, and both borrow their vocabulary from radio and computing, which is a fair clue to their date.

Selenite carries a separate strand. Named for Selene, the moon, its bladed satin form was used for window panes in medieval churches before glass was cheap, so light through selenite has an old association with a sanctuary. That is a better reason to use it than most of what is claimed for it now.

The stones of this ray

• Clear quartz (Quartz, Mohs 7). The stone every tradition kept and nobody agrees about. Piezoelectric, abundant, and used as a scrying surface long before it was called a master healer.
• Rutilated quartz (Quartz, Mohs 7). Clear quartz shot through with golden needles of titanium oxide, once called Venus hair. The inclusion is the point, not the flaw.
• Selenite (Evaporites & halides, Mohs 2). Gypsum in its clear bladed form, named for the moon, soft enough to scratch with a fingernail and destroyed by water. The Naica cave crystals are eleven metres long.
• Diamond (Carbons, glasses & organics, Mohs 10). Pure carbon, the hardest natural substance, and the stone whose modern meaning was written by an advertising campaign in 1947. Its supply chain deserves your attention.

Working with the ray

Start with clear quartz for anything where you want the practice rather than the association: the stone is not going to lean the exercise in a direction, which is the point. It is the natural choice for a first meditation stone, for the centre of a grid where the theme comes from the surrounding stones, and for a bedside object that means beginning again.

Selenite is the traditional clearing tool in modern practice, used as a plate or a bar on which other stones are rested. That habit is fifty years old at most, and it has one practical merit and one practical hazard. The merit is that it gives you a reason to handle your stones regularly. The hazard is that people wash selenite, which slowly dissolves it.

A clear stone is also the honest choice when you do not know what you want. Rather than buying a stone whose meaning you have read about and not felt, take clear quartz and let a month of carrying tell you what you reach for it for.

Colour you can trust

Two substitutions are common and neither is a scandal if it is declared. Glass is sold as quartz constantly, and the tests are simple: glass warms fast in the hand while quartz stays cold for several seconds, glass often holds round bubbles while quartz holds angular veils and needles, and glass moulded into a point will have a seam.

The second is treatment. Aura quartz, in all its metallic rainbow finishes, is real quartz bonded with a vapour-deposited metal film in a vacuum chamber. It is a manufactured coating from the 1980s, not a natural colour, and any page describing its ancient meaning is inventing one.

For selenite, check that a piece labelled selenite is gypsum rather than the harder white stones sold under the same name, and never buy a selenite piece you intend to put in water. For diamond, the questions are about origin rather than identity, and the stone's own page covers them.
