Deneb Algedi
Deneb Algedi marks the tail of the sea-goat Capricornus, at 23°33′ Aquarius in 2000 and 23°54′ Aquarius in 2025. Ptolemy gave the tail stars the nature of Saturn and Jupiter. Astrologers read a close conjunction as responsibility, sound judgement and authority that can bring both gain and grief.
The judge and counsellor: authority built on responsibility, weighing gain against loss with a long view.

Deneb Algedi's degree, a Capricorn star in Aquarius
Deneb Algedi is Delta Capricorni, magnitude 2.9, the brightest star in the tail of the sea-goat. It belongs to the constellation Capricornus, yet in the tropical zodiac it stands in Aquarius: 22°51′ Aquarius in 1950, 23°33′ Aquarius in 2000 and 23°54′ Aquarius in 2025. The reason is precession. The tropical signs are counted from the spring equinox, which drifts backwards against the stars, so each star advances about 1° in 72 years and constellations and signs have parted.
With an orb of 1°, someone born in 1950 has a planet on Deneb Algedi between 21°51′ and 23°51′ Aquarius. For someone born in 2025 the window runs from 22°54′ to 24°54′.
The star lies 2.6° south of the ecliptic, close enough for the Moon to pass in front of it, so a zodiac conjunction is a real meeting in the sky. It is also an eclipsing binary that dims slightly at regular intervals. Ptolemy, in Tetrabiblos I.9, says the stars in the tail of Capricorn are like Saturn and Jupiter.
The sea-goat
The name comes from the Arabic for the tail of the goat. The goat with a fish's tail is one of the oldest figures of the zodiac. Babylonian astronomers drew it as the goat-fish linked with Ea, god of fresh water and wisdom. Greek writers told several stories: Pan leaping into the Nile to escape the monster Typhon, his lower half turning into a fish, or the goat Amalthea who nursed the infant Zeus.
The tail is the part of the creature still in the water, the depths the goat climbs out of. Astrologers read the sea-goat as ambition rising from emotional or ancestral depths. The tail, as the end of the figure, has been linked with endings and with the experience that comes at the close of a long effort.
Saturn and Jupiter in the tradition
Ptolemy's Saturn and Jupiter nature is the same he gave to Algol's stars, yet Deneb Algedi never carried Algol's reputation. Here the pairing reads as the balance it describes: Saturn's limits and duty with Jupiter's law and reward. Medieval authors and Vivian Robson in 1923 gave the star a double character, linked with both benefit and harm, happiness and sorrow, and with the law.
Astrologers today often read Deneb Algedi as the star of the judge and counsellor. People with a strong contact tend to take responsibility seriously and to be trusted with decisions that affect others. The double character shows as a life in which gains and losses arrive together, and as a talent for helping others weigh theirs.
In Aquarius, a Saturn-ruled air sign of groups and principles, the star's Saturn side is at home. Its judgement often turns toward communities, institutions and fairness for many people as well as for oneself.
Deneb Algedi conjunct a planet
The Sun reaches Deneb Algedi around 12–13 February, so people born then carry a Sun on the star. Astrologers read it as a serious, principled Aquarian temperament with a sense of responsibility to a group or cause and an instinct for fairness.
The Moon on Deneb Algedi gives a reserved emotional life and a strong sense of duty toward family. You may carry others' worries as if they were yours; learning to set some down is part of the work. Mercury here favours careful reasoning and suits law, mediation, policy or counselling.
Venus brings loyalty and a serious approach to love, with a tendency to choose responsibility over pleasure. Mars gives determination and staying power, and can make you fight hard for a principle. Jupiter matches the star's second nature and is read as wisdom, authority and success in law or teaching. Saturn doubles its first nature and gives great endurance, with heaviness as the risk. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto mark a generation's relation to authority and justice.
Deneb Algedi on the Ascendant or Midheaven
Deneb Algedi rising gives a composed, serious manner, someone who seems older or more responsible than their years. People may bring you their problems because you look like you can hold them. Lightness has to be chosen deliberately.
On the Midheaven the star favours a reputation for judgement and reliability. Careers in law, administration, mediation, counselling or institutional leadership suit it. The double nature of the tradition often shows as a career with marked highs and lows, where the long view and steady principles carry the person through.
Questions to reflect on
- Which responsibilities are yours to carry, and which could you set down?
- Where do you trust your own judgement, and where do you doubt it?
- How have gains and losses arrived together in your life?
- What principle would you defend even at a cost?
