Emerald

Emerald is beryl coloured green by chromium, and it is the stone that best rewards knowing a little geology. Chromium and beryllium almost never meet; where they do, the conditions that produce the colour also fracture the crystal. That is why almost every emerald on earth is included, and why almost every one has been oiled.

What it actually is

Beryl, Be3Al2Si6O18, hexagonal, hardness 7.5 to 8, coloured green by chromium or vanadium substituting for aluminium.

The geochemistry is the whole story. Beryllium concentrates in granitic rocks; chromium belongs with dark mantle-derived rocks. They rarely occupy the same place. Emerald forms where hydrothermal fluids from a granite invade chromium-bearing schist or, in Colombia, where fluids moved through black shales, and the process is turbulent enough to fracture the crystal as it grows.

Those internal fractures and inclusions are called the jardin, the garden, and the trade accepts them as characteristic rather than as flaws. A completely clean emerald is more likely to be synthetic than exceptional.

Emerald is hard but not tough. It resists scratching and chips readily, and pre-existing fractures make impact damage far more likely than the hardness number suggests.

Where it comes from

Colombia produces the benchmark material from Muzo, Chivor and Coscuez, and Colombian stones set the standard for colour. Zambia's Kafubu deposits supply large volumes of slightly bluer material. Brazil, Afghanistan, Russia and Ethiopia are significant sources.

Egypt's Wadi Sikait mines in the Eastern Desert were worked from before 1500 BCE and supplied the classical Mediterranean; they were later called Cleopatra's mines, though the association is loose. The material is generally pale and included by modern standards.

The Spanish conquest of Colombia in the sixteenth century transformed the trade, moving emeralds of a quality Europe had not seen to India, where Mughal patrons carved them, and back to Europe.

What the traditions claimed

The classical world read emerald as Venus's stone and credited it with resting the eyes. Pliny records that lapidaries looked at emeralds to relieve strain, which is a plausible observation about colour fatigue rather than a magical claim, and reports that Nero watched gladiatorial games through a green gem, though what it was and why remain unsettled.

Medieval lapidaries gave emerald a reputation for chastity, holding that the stone would shatter if the wearer broke a vow, and for revealing whether what was said in its presence was true. That combination of moral function and physical fragility is a striking image, and it is probably not a coincidence that the most fracture-prone precious stone acquired the reputation for breaking under falsehood.

In Ayurvedic tradition emerald is panna, the gem of Mercury, prescribed for intellect, speech and commerce.

Mughal India carved emeralds with Quranic inscriptions, producing objects that combine gem, talisman and text.

How it is worked with

Emerald is a demanding stone and an unusually apt one for questions about promises. The vow tradition is coherent, and its physical fragility gives it a reading nothing else in the catalogue quite matches: something valuable that must be handled carefully or it breaks.

For practice, a small included stone is far more affordable than the jewellery trade suggests, since the qualities the market pays for are exactly the ones a practitioner does not need.

For wear, treat it as a pendant stone. A daily ring will need re-oiling every few years and will eventually chip.

If you want the Vedic prescription, an astrologer works from Mercury's placement in the chart rather than from a birth month, and green tourmaline or peridot are traditional substitutes.

Buying it honestly

Clarity enhancement is near-universal and is the defining issue. Emeralds are filled with cedarwood oil, resins or polymers to make fractures less visible, and reputable trade discloses the degree, from none through minor to significant. Cedarwood oil is traditional and reversible; hardened resins are not.

The practical consequences are real: heat drives out oil, ultrasonic cleaning opens fractures, and solvents including some jewellery dips will damage a filled stone.

Synthetic emerald has been grown by flux and hydrothermal methods since the 1930s and is chemically identical to natural. It is legitimate when disclosed and far cheaper.

At the low end, green glass, green fluorite, dyed beryl and doublets with a thin emerald slice over a lesser base all appear. A large clean bright green stone at a low price is not an emerald.

Handle with care

Never ultrasonic, never steam, never a jeweller's torch without telling them, and no solvents. Warm soapy water and a soft brush only. Expect re-oiling every few years if worn daily.
