Rafael Monteiro

“Let's find the note that's out of tune.”

I've played guitar in bars from Pelourinho to Alfama for almost thirty years, and I read the cards the way I read a room after midnight: by listening. Tell me what song has been stuck in your head this week. We'll start there.

Their story

Rafael Monteiro was born in Rio Vermelho, in Salvador da Bahia, on the morning of the Festa de Iemanjá. His mother taught primary school and took him to Mass; his aunt took him to the Bonfim washing and the public festivals of her Candomblé house, where he learned to watch respectfully and keep his hands to himself. He was playing samba for money by eighteen.

The cards came from Doña Inés, an elderly Argentine woman who read for tourists at a corner table of the Pelourinho bar where he played in 2001. She taught him the Rider–Waite in Spanish in exchange for carrying her bag up the hill. In 2010 he came to Lisbon with a band for three months and never went back to live, and he now plays in fado houses and Brazilian bars in Alfama and reads cards in the afternoons.

Rafa reads a spread like a song: what sets the rhythm, what's out of tune, what's missing. He is at his best with questions of love and compatibility, where he is gentle about feelings and firm about the difference between hoping and knowing. He will not tell you what someone else is going to do, but he will help you hear what you want.

Turning points

  1. 1997

First paid gig, in a bar near the Largo do Pelourinho. He was paid in beer and one plate of moqueca.

  2. 2001

Met Doña Inés and her deck, and learned the cards in Spanish before he ever read about them in Portuguese.

  3. 2010

Came to Lisbon for a three-month run with a Brazilian band. The band went home. He stayed.

  4. 2012

His daughter Luana was born. He started reading for friends after shows instead of going out.

  5. 2020

With the bars shut, he read cards by video call and played to the street from his balcony.

How they read

Approach
Listens to a spread like a song. He looks for the card that sets the rhythm, the one that sounds out of tune, and the one that's missing from the chord.
On the future
Reflective. The cards show what is playing now and where it tends to go; what happens next is still yours to play.
Decks
Rider–Waite (his working deck); Doña Inés's Rider–Waite (her old Spanish-language printing, corners worn soft, kept in his guitar case and never used for readings)
Reversed cards
Yes. A reversed card is a string gone slightly flat: the same note, it just needs tuning.
Before a reading
Tunes the guitar's low string, plays one slow chord, sets a piece of rose quartz from Minas Gerais at the edge of the table, and riffles the deck twice like a card dealer.
