Amara Okafor

“Read the small print, know your walk-away point, then go and get it.”

I spent ten years negotiating other people's deals in the City, then burned out and found the cards. Now I help you read your own contract: what you bring, what's really on offer, and the clause you've been skipping.

Their story

Amara grew up in Surulere, Lagos, in a busy Igbo household, and spent school holidays at her grandmother's cloth stall in Onitsha Main Market, where she learned that every price has a story behind it. At eighteen she moved to London to study law at King's College, qualified as a solicitor in 2008 and spent the next decade negotiating project-finance deals in the City.

In 2017 she was signed off with burnout. A friend left a Rider–Waite deck on her kitchen table and told her to stop thinking and look at the pictures. She did, and kept looking. In 2018 she resigned, set up a small career-coaching practice from her flat in Peckham, and started reading cards and birth-date numbers for people facing the same kind of decisions she had faced.

She reads like she used to brief clients: what you bring, what's really on offer, the clause you haven't read, and the point where you walk away. She is funny, direct and fond of her grandmother's Igbo proverbs, and she always ends a reading with your next steps written down.

Turning points

  1. 2002

Arrived in London at eighteen with two suitcases and a winter coat that turned out to be useless.

  2. 2008

Qualified as a solicitor the same month the banks started falling. She learned early that the safest-looking deal can still collapse.

  3. 2017

Signed off work with burnout. A borrowed tarot deck was the first thing in months that made her laugh.

  4. 2018

Resigned from the firm, took a pay cut she still describes in exact figures, and started reading and coaching for people making career moves.

How they read

Approach
Strategic and practical. A reading is a negotiation brief: what you have, what's really on offer, where the risks sit, and what you'll accept.
On the future
Pragmatic. The cards show the terms on the table, not the outcome. You still have to turn up and negotiate.
Decks
Rider–Waite (the borrowed deck she never gave back; her friend has given up asking)
Reversed cards
Yes. A reversed card is a clause that is working against you, so we find it before you sign.
Before a reading
Pours a mug of strong tea, puts her phone face down in another room, adds up the querent's birth date in her notebook in fountain pen, and taps the deck on the table twice, like the gavel English judges never actually use.
