Why do different sources give different birthstones for this month?

Because they are copying different lists without saying which. The modern American list of 1912 and its revisions, older European traditional lists, and various regional lists all disagree, and none of them is an authority over the others. Any page presenting one answer as the birthstone is hiding a real disagreement.

Where did the modern birthstone list come from?

The American National Association of Jewelers agreed a standard list in 1912 so that shops in different states would stock and advertise the same stones. It was revised in 1952, tanzanite was added to December in 2002, and spinel to August in 2016. It is a commercial standard, and it works well as one.

Are cultured pearls real pearls?

June has three official birthstones, which is more than any other month, and they have almost nothing in common. Pearl is made by a living animal and ruined by perfume. Moonstone is feldspar with light floating inside it. Alexandrite changes colour under different light and is so rare that most of what is sold under the name is synthetic.

The modern answer

The 1912 list gave June pearl, with moonstone and alexandrite added subsequently, and all three are current.

Pearl is the only gem in the calendar produced by a living animal and the only one that needs no cutting. It is aragonite platelets bound by conchiolin, laid down by a mollusc around an irritant, and its lustre comes from light interfering between those microscopic layers.

Moonstone is orthoclase feldspar with albite layers that scatter blue light, producing adularescence, the sheen that seems to float below the surface.

Alexandrite is a chrysoberyl that appears green in daylight and red under incandescent light, an effect caused by chromium and by the particular way the stone transmits light at two wavelengths. It was found in the Urals in the 1830s and named for the future Tsar Alexander II.

The older lists

Traditional lists give June to pearl, with agate as a common alternate.

Pearl's history is the deepest here. Pliny called it the most valuable of all things, and the Roman appetite for pearls from the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean was a significant drain on the imperial economy. In Indian tradition pearl, mukta, is the gem of the Moon in the navaratna, prescribed for emotional steadiness and for the mother.

Moonstone in Indian tradition is chandrakanta, moon-formed, said to be made of solidified moonbeams and traditionally given to lovers. Roman writers connected it to the moon on the same reasoning, and Pliny reports the belief that its image waxed and waned.

Alexandrite has no ancient tradition at all, being a nineteenth-century discovery, and its meanings are modern.

What these three are like to own

Radically different, so read the stone rather than the month.

Pearl is the most fragile object in the catalogue after nothing at all. It is calcium carbonate, so perfume, hairspray, cosmetics, vinegar, lemon juice and even sustained sweat etch its surface. Last thing on, first thing off, wipe after wearing, store flat, and restring a worn strand every year or two. Almost all pearls sold are cultured, which is honest and normal; imitation pearls are coated glass or plastic and feel smooth against a tooth where a real pearl feels gritty.

Moonstone at hardness 6 with two cleavage directions is not a working ring stone, though it takes a pendant well.

Alexandrite at 8.5 is durable but genuinely rare. Most stones sold as alexandrite are synthetic corundum or spinel with a colour change, which is a different material entirely.

June covers Gemini and Cancer. Zodiac lists give Gemini agate, citrine or pearl, and Cancer moonstone or pearl, so the calendar and the sky largely agree for the second half of the month.

In Jyotish, Cancer is ruled by the Moon, whose gem is pearl, which makes a June Cancer another rare case of the Western month and the Vedic prescription pointing the same way. Gemini answers to Mercury and emerald.
