What it means
Zhèn puts one strong line underneath two open ones, and the shape is the meaning: energy arriving from below, into a situation that was not expecting it. Thunder in the spring is the classical image, the sound that wakes the seeds and the hibernating animals at the same time.
The trigram carries fear as well as vigour, and the classic does not pretend otherwise. Hexagram 51, doubled Zhèn, opens with thunder coming and everyone jumping in alarm, then adds that the man who was performing the sacrifice did not drop the ladle. The shock is real; the test is whether it dislodges you from what you were doing. This is why Zhèn is a beginning trigram rather than a destructive one. It clears the ground by startling it.
As the eldest son it holds the first inherited portion of Qián's initiative, delivered as a burst rather than a steady drive. Its element is Wood, its direction east, its season spring, and its body part the foot, the part that moves first.
In a reading
Zhèn signals an event, usually one you did not schedule. News, a shock, an interruption, the sudden return of something you had stopped tracking. Its counsel is almost always the same: the noise passes faster than people expect, and what matters is what you were holding when it arrived.
Treat it as a starting gun rather than a verdict. Thunder announces the storm; it is not itself the weather.
