Wind

巽 · Xùn

A single yin line at the base of two yang lines. Xùn is wind, and also wood, and the pair share one idea: what enters gradually, through every gap, and ends up everywhere.

What it means

Xùn has two images and they explain each other. Wind reaches into places nothing solid could go, not by pushing harder but by having no shape of its own. Wood does the same thing more slowly, with roots that find the crack in the rock and widen it over years. Both are yielding at the point of contact and irresistible over time.

The trigram is the classic's model of influence as opposed to force. Where Qián takes ground, Xùn arrives in it. The Image commentary attaches the spread of a ruler's instructions to it, since a policy that has genuinely permeated a country works nothing like an order that has merely been issued.

Its risk is the shadow of its virtue: influence that never declares itself becomes indecision, or manipulation. Hexagram 57 warns about excessive deference more than once. As the eldest daughter, Xùn holds the first portion of Kūn's yielding nature, put to active use. Its element is Wood, its seat the southeast, its season the turn from spring into summer.

In a reading

Xùn in a reading favours the small repeated action over the decisive one. It suggests that the matter will move if you keep applying mild pressure in one direction and stop expecting a single conversation to settle it.

When it doubles, ask whether patience has quietly become avoidance. Wind that never stops blowing is also wind that never arrives anywhere.
