Fomalhaut
Fomalhaut is the bright star in the mouth of the Southern Fish, at 3°52′ Pisces in 2000 and 4°13′ Pisces in 2025. Ptolemy gave it the nature of Venus and Mercury. A later tradition counts it among the four royal stars of Persia, and astrologers read a close conjunction as vision, artistry and idealism that lasts when the ideal stays clean.
The dreamer who drinks from the source: vision and artistry that endure when the ideal is kept honest.

Fomalhaut's degree in early Pisces
Fomalhaut is Alpha Piscis Austrini, magnitude 1.2, the brightest star in the Southern Fish. In the tropical zodiac it stood at 3°10′ Pisces in 1950, 3°52′ Pisces in 2000 and 4°13′ Pisces in 2025. Precession, the backward slide of the equinox against the stars, advances every star about 1° in 72 years, so the year of birth sets the position.
With a 1° orb, someone born in 1950 has a planet on Fomalhaut between 2°10′ and 4°10′ Pisces. Someone born in 2025 needs one between 3°13′ and 5°13′.
Fomalhaut lies 21.14° south of the ecliptic. The zodiac conjunction projects it onto the Sun's path, the usual method, though astrologers who use parans, the moments when a star and a planet rise, culminate or set together, may weigh that more for a star this far south. For northern observers it is the lone bright star low in the southern sky on autumn evenings, with few bright neighbours. Ptolemy, in Tetrabiblos I.9, says the bright star in the mouth of the Southern Fish is like Venus and Mercury.
The fish that drinks the water of Aquarius
The name comes from the Arabic for the mouth of the fish. On star maps the Southern Fish lies under Aquarius, drinking the stream of water poured from the Water Bearer's jar. Greek writers linked the fish with a Syrian goddess, Derceto or Atargatis, who fell into a lake and was saved by a fish, and they placed its image in the sky in thanks.
The picture is of a creature taking in a stream from above, a source of nourishment and inspiration. Astrologers draw on this image for the star's meaning: a person who receives something from beyond ordinary life and gives it form.
Venus and Mercury, and the royal-star tradition
Ptolemy's Venus and Mercury pairing is the nature of art, language and grace. Medieval authors and Vivian Robson in 1923 linked Fomalhaut with eminence, fortune and power, with a dreamy, idealistic temperament, and with a lasting reputation. They also said it could turn harmful when badly placed.
Fomalhaut is the fourth royal star of Persia, the Watcher of the South, alongside Aldebaran, Regulus and Antares. That scheme is a later tradition. European writers from the late eighteenth century onward attributed it to ancient Persia, noting that around 3000 BCE the four stars lay near the equinoxes and solstices, but the ancient evidence is thin. In the modern frame each watcher carries a condition, and Fomalhaut's is usually put as keeping one's ideals free of corruption.
Read today, Fomalhaut describes vision: artistic, spiritual or social. In Pisces, Jupiter's water sign of imagination and compassion, the star's idealism is at home. The gift tends to last when the vision stays honest, and to sour when it is bent for gain.
Fomalhaut conjunct a planet
The Sun reaches Fomalhaut around 22–23 February, so people born then have the Sun on the star. Astrologers read it as an imaginative, idealistic Piscean temperament with a talent for giving shape to a vision, in art, writing or a cause.
The Moon on Fomalhaut gives a sensitive, receptive emotional life and strong intuition. Moods can follow the atmosphere around you, and quiet time helps you tell your own feelings from other people's. Mercury here is one of the star's natural partners and favours poetry, storytelling, music and persuasive writing.
Venus on Fomalhaut is its other natural partner: artistic gifts, romantic idealism and a love of beauty. Mars gives the vision drive and courage, and can make you fight for an ideal. Jupiter widens the reach and is read as recognition and a lasting name. Saturn gives the dream structure and discipline, which can make the difference between vision and achievement. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto mark a generation's ideals.
Fomalhaut on the Ascendant or Midheaven
Fomalhaut rising gives a gentle, otherworldly manner. People may see you as a dreamer or an artist before they know your work. The tradition's caution is vagueness: practical anchors help the vision land.
On the Midheaven the star favours a reputation built on vision and creativity: the arts, writing, spiritual or humanitarian work. The royal-star frame is most often applied here. Recognition is said to last when the person keeps faith with the ideal, and to fall away when the ideal is traded for advantage.
