The Fool

A card drawn from one of three decks

The Fool

Rider–Waite–Smith Tarot
The Fool

A step you have not planned yet is the one on offer. The Fool is halfway off the cliff edge with his eyes on the sky, a white flower in one hand and everything he owns knotted into a small bag over his shoulder. He is not careless so much as unburdened. Today rewards the unrehearsed over the prepared: the conversation you have not scripted, the route you do not know, the yes given before you have finished reasoning about it. Travel light. The dog at his heel is your own instinct, and it is already awake.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You do not need talking into stepping off the edge, which is why the Fool draws your eye to the little bag instead. He carries almost nothing and gets past anything because of it. Check what you are hauling into this beginning: an old grudge, a score, a plan left over from a previous life. Start it clean, so the first step is genuinely new and not a rerun taken faster.

Taurus

Your instinct is to price the thing before you touch it, and the Fool travels without a price list. He holds a white flower, not a contract. Something is beginning whose worth will not show until you are inside it. You are allowed to keep the ground you have. You are not allowed to make it the reason. One unhedged step is the ask, and it can be small.

Gemini

Beginnings come easily to you. You can open six before lunch and stand at the edge of all six, talking. The Fool only becomes interesting when the foot actually leaves the rock. Pick the one that frightens you slightly and go, and leave the other five unopened. Curiosity that never commits is sightseeing.

Cancer

You will want to know where you sleep before you agree to go anywhere, and the Fool leaves without the address. What he takes is small and personal, which is the compromise available to you: carry one familiar thing onto unfamiliar ground rather than waiting for the ground to be furnished first. Home can travel in a bag on a stick.

Leo

The Fool is about to look ridiculous and does not appear to mind, and that is your part of the card. Starting something in public means being a beginner in public: out of step, badly dressed, applauded by nobody. Take the class, ask the naive question, be the newest person in the room. Dignity held too carefully is the thing that will keep you standing still.

Virgo

You want the route surveyed and the risks itemised, and the Fool walks with his eyes off his feet. Light bag, one flower, no contingency file. Begin before the preparation is finished. The information you actually need is out on the path, and no checklist is going to deliver it to you first.

Libra

You will weigh this beginning against the other one until both expire. The Fool does not compare, he steps. Notice that nobody stands beside him at the cliff edge holding the alternative. Decide it alone and decide it early, and accept that the option you did not take was never going to be settled by more discussion.

Scorpio

You want to know what sits under the offer, and this one has nothing under it yet. The Fool begins with no leverage, no information and no exit arranged. That is the whole ask: enter something you cannot yet control, openly, instead of testing it from a distance. The innocence here is not a trick played on you. It is the entry fee.

Sagittarius

The open road is your native country, so the Fool sells you nothing new. His restraint is the interesting part: one bag, one flower, one step. You tend to begin by widening the plan until it needs a year and a visa. Shrink it. The mountains behind him stay in the distance, and the only ground available is what is under your boot.

Capricorn

You have a staircase drawn where the Fool has a cliff. Beginning with no rung underneath feels like negligence, and it is the assignment on the table. Pick the venture nobody has underwritten and put an hour into it before your own plan has authorised it. The summit you keep working toward is one of the painted mountains behind him, and it will wait.

Aquarius

You are excellent at the new in theory. The Fool wants it in the body: feet, road, weather, a flower in the hand. Stop designing the improved version and enter the clumsy first one. Being a novice in the actual world is less elegant than being right about it in advance, and it is the half that moves you.

Pisces

You are already at the cliff edge in your imagination, which is not the step. The Fool has a dog at his heel, awake and tracking, and that instinct is the part of you to follow rather than the drift. Ground one of the dreams in something real: a form signed, a message sent, a date agreed. Keep the reverie and give it a foot.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

Your habit is to secure the supplies before you move, and the Fool travels with a bag the size of a lunch. He gets past obstacles precisely because there is so little to lift over them. Work out how much of the stockpile is for the journey and how much is for the fear. Take the opening while it is open; the rest can be gathered on the road.

Ox

You distrust anything that has not been worked for, and a beginning that arrives this light looks unserious. The Fool is not asking you to abandon the field, only to walk to the edge of it. One unplanned step does not undo years of steady ground. Refusing every unproven thing is its own way of standing still.

Tiger

Leaping is the easy half for you. The white flower is the half you skip: going out without a fight in it, beginning something that does not need an opponent. Start this one for curiosity and pleasure rather than to prove a point. There is nothing on the cliff to defeat.

Rabbit

You prefer a path already swept, and this one has no path at all. Notice the Fool's manners anyway. He walks into the unknown unarmed, open-faced, carrying a flower, and he does not brace for it. Say yes to the invitation that has no shape yet. Declining gracefully is still declining.

Dragon

You want the beginning to be worthy of you, large enough to announce. The Fool starts in cheap bright clothes on an empty cliff with nobody watching, and the eventual size of it is not what the picture is about. Begin the small undignified version. Waiting for an entrance is how the available steps get missed.

Snake

You would rather study the ground a long while and move once, perfectly. The Fool has no information and goes anyway, eyes on the sky. This beginning cannot be assessed from where you are standing, because the data lives out on the path. Move first and gather as you walk, which reverses your usual order.

Horse

Motion comes free to you, so the cliff is not your challenge. Direction is. He walks one way, off one edge, toward mountains he can actually see. You can spend enormous energy beginning in circles. Choose the single unfamiliar road and stay on it past the first mile.

Goat

You want to be sure of the company before you go, and his only companion is a dog. Uncertainty reads as exposure to you, yet nothing in this picture is hostile: the sun at his back, the flower intact, the ground still under him. Begin something without knowing whether somebody will catch you.

Monkey

You will find the clever way around the cliff, and cleverness is not what is wanted. The Fool goes over the edge with no trick in his pocket. Try the thing you might be bad at, and stay in it past the point where being amusing stops working. Improvisation is not the same as beginning.

Rooster

You notice the unlaced boot, the missed detail, the man walking with his eyes off his feet, and you are right about all of it. The Fool is still the card on the table. Let something start untidy and unannounced, and hold the correction until there is a shape to correct. Precision applied this early is just a closed door.

Dog

You will ask first whether the new thing is fair and who might be hurt by it, which is a decent question and not the one this card is on. The Fool goes alone, carrying nothing that belongs to anybody else. Take the beginning that is genuinely yours, and let the worrying rest for the length of one step.

Pig

You enjoy a beginning, and you also enjoy the table where it was announced. There is no feast in this picture, only a bag, a flower and a road going uphill. Leave the good company early and go and do the thing. An hour of pleasure deferred is nothing; an opening walked past does not come back the same.
