One of the sixty-four hexagrams

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

The Taming Power of the Great

Hexagram 26 is heaven held inside a mountain: real power under real restraint, which the classic reads as storage rather than suppression. If something is holding you back today, the interval is not wasted. The Image is direct about how to use it. Learn the old sayings and the recorded deeds, because what you take in while held is what you have when released. The fourth line adds a rule for managing force, your own included: fit the guard board to the young bull's horns now, while it is easy. Then the Judgment sends what you have built away from home.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

Being held back is hard for you, and the first line asks you to accept it at once: danger is at hand, it helps to stop. Stop, then use the interval. What you store now is what you will have when released.

Taurus

Accumulation is your instinct and this hexagram approves. Store knowledge rather than goods. The Image recommends learning the old sayings and recorded deeds, which keep better than most things you could gather.

Gemini

Your mind wants to be out in the world, and the hexagram holds it inside the mountain for now. Use the time on the Image's reading list. Learning taken in under restraint becomes character later.

Cancer

A great deal is held in with you, and the hexagram calls that storage rather than suppression. Make sure it is: what you have been containing should be gathering into something usable, not only weighing on you.

Leo

Restraint chafes when you know your own strength. The Judgment points the strength outward: not eating at home brings good fortune. What you have been building should be spent at other people's tables, in service.

Virgo

Daily practice suits you, and the third line asks for exactly that: practise driving and defence every day. Treat the delay as drill time, so that when it lifts you are already good at what comes next.

Libra

Restraining others without offending them is the problem you will be handed. The fourth line shows the way: a guard board on a young bull's horns, fitted early while it is easy. Gentle structural limits now spare a fight later.

Scorpio

Contained intensity is familiar ground. The fifth line's boar keeps its tusk and stops being dangerous. Redirect a force rather than fight it, your own included, and the hexagram calls that good fortune.

Sagittarius

Being stopped is the thing you hate most, and this hexagram stops you. Use the interval on study. The Image is the clearest endorsement of learning in the classic, and it pays out when the way opens.

Capricorn

Capacity built under constraint is something you understand, and this hexagram agrees with you. Hold the power, keep learning, and wait for the top line's open thoroughfare of heaven rather than forcing it.

Aquarius

More ideas than the situation can release are piling up. Store them. The hexagram reads holding back as accumulation, and its top line expects everything held in to find somewhere to go.

Pisces

Restraint can feel like loss to you. The second line has the axle housing off the wagon, intact and going nowhere, and the classic treats that as workable. Rest in the stillness without calling it failure.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

Storing up is your talent, and this is the hexagram of stored power. Store learning as well as resources. The Image values what you take in from the past above what you keep in reserve.

Ox

Patient accumulation is your way, and this is its hexagram. Keep adding to what you know while the restraint holds. When the way opens, the top line has it opening fully.

Tiger

Restraint feels like a cage to you. The hexagram calls it a mountain holding heaven, which is a stronger image. Let the force build under the hold, and do your daily drill while it does.

Rabbit

Limits sit more easily with you than with most, which makes this hexagram gentle on you. Do not simply wait it out. The third line asks for daily practice, so use the quiet to sharpen something.

Dragon

Your power is great and it is being held. The Judgment says it helps to cross the great water, so the restraint is preparation for a large crossing, not a cancellation. Study the route.

Snake

Knowing how to wait is your gift, and the hexagram asks you to fill the wait with learning. The sayings of antiquity and deeds of the past are the stores the Image names. Read deeply while you are held.

Horse

The third line has a good horse following others, with daily practice in driving and defence. Run in harness for now. The freedom comes at the top line, and the drill decides how well you use it.

Goat

Other people may seem to be holding you back more than circumstance is. The hexagram reads any restraint as a chance to store up character. Take what is offered to learn, and let the holding become accumulation.

Monkey

Contained energy in you goes looking for mischief. The fifth line's gelded boar shows the hexagram's preference: the force kept, the danger removed. Point the cleverness at study rather than escape.

Rooster

Discipline is natural to you, and the third line rewards it: daily practice in driving and defence. Keep the routine through the delay, and when the restraint lifts you will be ready rather than rusty.

Dog

Guarding against every danger at once is your reflex. The fourth line asks only for prevention at the easy point, the guard board on the young bull's horns. Fit the board now and stop keeping watch.

Pig

Staying home is comfortable, and the Judgment says not eating at home brings good fortune. Take what you have built up and offer it somewhere outside your usual table.
