One of the sixty-four hexagrams

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

The Cauldron

Hexagram 50 draws a bronze ritual vessel line by line, legs at the bottom and carrying rings at the top. Its Judgment is entirely favourable and spends no words qualifying it. The cauldron transforms: raw material goes in, fire is applied, and something fit to offer comes out. Today suits that kind of work, turning rough material into a finished form. The Image puts the condition first. Make your position correct and your destiny steadies, as a vessel only works standing level. Check the fit between what you are taking on and what you can carry, because the fourth line is the legs snapping in public.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You will want to start cooking before the vessel is set up. The Image asks first for a correct position, the cauldron standing level. Spend the opening part of the day on the setup and the transformation follows.

Taurus

Slow cooking is the cauldron's method and yours: raw material, steady heat, a vessel that does not tip. Keep the fire even. Nothing in this hexagram needs to go faster than the cooking allows.

Gemini

Several pots on the stove is your habit. The cauldron is one vessel, drawn line by line, and the fourth line breaks its legs under too much. Choose the one thing worth transforming and give it the fire.

Cancer

Feeding people is where you shine, and this hexagram is literally about food. The second line has the cauldron full and the rivals unable to reach it. Cook for your own without worrying who is watching the pot.

Leo

The cauldron was the emblem of legitimate rule, which suits you. The fourth line is the warning attached: legs breaking under an office too big for them, everything spilled in public. Make sure the vessel carries the weight.

Virgo

Refinement is this hexagram's business, so your talent is welcome. The first line begins by turning the cauldron upside down to clean it. Do the undignified part first and get the old matter out before the new goes in.

Libra

Proper fittings and proper form matter to you, and the fifth line is all fittings: yellow handles, golden rings. Get them right. A vessel in this hexagram serves because it is well made, not because it is admired.

Scorpio

You can tell when something excellent is going to waste. That is the third line: the handle altered, the pheasant fat uneaten. The fault is in the fitting, not the contents, so look for the blocked handle rather than the bad dish.

Sagittarius

Big ideas interest you more than cooking them through. The cauldron is about the slow process that turns raw material into something fit to offer. Pick one idea and keep the heat under it.

Capricorn

Holding office is your territory, and this is the hexagram of office. Its rule is that the position must be correct before the contents can be trusted. Check that what you are carrying matches what your legs can bear.

Aquarius

The culture of a group matters to you, and culture is exactly what this vessel stands for. Contribute through the slow work of transformation: teaching, refining, ritual. The cauldron does not reform by declaration.

Pisces

Raw feeling reaches you in quantity and mostly unshaped. The cauldron shapes. Material goes in, fire is applied, and something comes out that can be offered. Give the feelings a vessel and some heat.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You have plenty stored, and the second line approves: food in the cauldron, rivals who envy it and cannot reach it. Keep the contents in the vessel rather than defending them aloud.

Ox

Your endurance makes you the legs of the cauldron for other people. The fourth line is what happens when legs carry more than they were built for. Check the load before taking on anything else.

Tiger

Transformation looks to you like a fight to be won. The cauldron transforms with heat and time. Stand the vessel level, put the fire under it, and let the change come at the speed of cooking.

Rabbit

Refinement comes easily to you, display less so. This hexagram ends on jade rings, hard and mild at once, rather than anything showier. That combination is yours, and it is the cauldron's best line.

Dragon

As a symbol of the mandate, the cauldron carries a grandeur that suits you. The Image asks you to earn it the plain way, by making your position correct. A vessel standing level is what makes the grand one usable.

Snake

You wait well, and in the third line regret is spent when the rain falls. If something excellent of yours is stuck and uneaten, the line finds good fortune in the end. Fix the handle while you wait.

Horse

Staying in one place is hard for you, and a cauldron is a vessel that stays put. Stand still long enough for something to cook. The transformation needs the pot to stay on the fire.

Goat

You make things beautiful, and the cauldron was a work of art as well as a tool. Let the beauty serve the contents. The fifth line's yellow handles and golden rings are there so the vessel can be lifted.

Monkey

Improvising a new vessel will appeal more than cleaning the old one. The first line tips the cauldron over to empty it and calls that exactly right. Clear out what is stale before you invent anything.

Rooster

Precision suits the cauldron, which was cast and measured to exact standards. Apply it to the fittings. The third line locates the trouble in the altered handle, so look closely at how things are carried.

Dog

Duty comes naturally to you, and the cauldron is about office faithfully held. The Image asks that your position be correct. Make sure the role you are loyal to is one you can actually carry.

Pig

A full pot is your idea of good fortune, and the second line agrees: food in the cauldron, good fortune. Share it, because the food in this hexagram was always meant to be offered rather than kept.
