One of the sixty-four hexagrams

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

Oppression

Hexagram 47 is a lake with the water drained out from under it: the container still standing, the substance gone. What sets it apart is the Judgment's last clause. When you have something to say, it is not believed. The depletion is real and your account of it carries no weight, which the classic names as the particular cruelty of this position. Its answer is endurance rather than strategy. Hold your own standards, expect not to be taken seriously, do not set out. Then the top line, for when the paralysis has set in: tangled in vines, telling yourself that moving brings regret. Feel the regret and begin anyway.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You will say it louder until it lands. The Judgment already told you it will not be believed. Stake yourself on your own will instead, and begin the smallest possible thing while nobody is listening.

Taurus

You will sit in the empty lake and wait for it to refill. The top line is tangled in vines, deciding that moving brings regret, and the text says start anyway. Good fortune follows the beginning, not the plan.

Gemini

You will reword the case. It is not a wording problem. The clause says plainly that what you have to say is not believed, so put the effort into the first move rather than the fifth version.

Cancer

Not being believed is the wound, and you will turn it inward. The Judgment attaches no blame to this position. Hold your own standards, do not set out, and start something small when the stillness gets heavy.

Leo

Losing credibility hurts more here than losing the resources. The Image stakes your life on following your own will, which is a thing done without an audience or a verdict. That is what is left.

Virgo

You will assemble the proof. The third line has every support fail in turn: oppressed by stone, leaning on thorns, coming home to find the house empty. Choose no more supports and begin without one.

Libra

You will look for the arbitration that decides whose account is true. There is none in this figure. What it offers is that the great person brings good fortune, and that no blame attaches to you meanwhile.

Scorpio

You will stop speaking altogether once you see you are not believed. Silence is not the counsel. Holding your own standard while unheard is, and then the top line, which says begin even badly.

Sagittarius

You will set out for better country. Hexagram 47 says do not. The lake is dry wherever you carry it, and the movement the text does permit is the small awkward beginning from exactly where you are.

Capricorn

An empty lake reads to you as personal failure. The third line collapses every support in sequence and the text still says no blame. Keep the standard, drop the audit, and start the one thing available.

Aquarius

You will explain the system that drained the lake, correctly, to people who are not listening. The Image turns inward instead and stakes everything on what you have decided to be. Hold that, and leave the explanation unmade.

Pisces

You will sink into the vines and call it acceptance. The top line names that exact feeling, says the regret is real, and tells you to begin regardless. Begin badly rather than beautifully.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You will count what is left. The container is intact and the substance is gone, which the counting will confirm without changing. Start the small thing that the top line rewards instead of taking inventory.

Ox

You will carry it without a word, and the grievance in this figure is precisely about not being heard. Say it once, expect it to fall flat, and keep your own standard afterwards. That is the whole arrangement.

Tiger

Force here is the third line: oppressed by stone, leaning on thorns, every support giving way as you put weight on it. Endurance is the counsel, and the one permitted movement is a beginning, not a charge.

Rabbit

You will go quiet and small until it passes, and the vines tighten around the stillness. The text says feel the regret and move anyway. Small, awkward, unwitnessed movement is what the top line rewards.

Dragon

Not being believed is intolerable to you, and the Judgment states it as a condition rather than an insult. No blame is attached. What remains is the will you have decided on, held without anyone confirming it.

Snake

You will wait in the dry lake for the right moment. This figure does not contain one. It contains a beginning made in bad conditions, and the regret felt in advance is part of the price of making it.

Horse

You will bolt. Do not set out, the figure says, and the only movement it allows is the small step taken from inside the vines. The distance you would cover is not the movement being asked for.

Goat

You will ask to be believed and be hurt when you are not. The Judgment warned you in advance that the account carries no weight. Hold your own standard, and start the smallest thing you can manage.

Monkey

You will find the workaround. Watch the third line: stone, thorns, an empty house, every clever support failing as it takes weight. There is no support in this one, only the beginning made without it.

Rooster

You will prove you were right. The proof is not heard, which is the whole distinguishing feature of hexagram 47. Keep the standard for later and put the effort into the first move instead.

Dog

You will keep faith with someone who will not hear it. The Image stakes your life on following your own will, and that will has to be yours rather than borrowed. Hold it, and begin something of your own.

Pig

You will wait for the comfort to come back. There is no water in the lake. Hold to what you have decided to be, and the top line will take a poor beginning over a comfortable stillness.
