One of the sixty-four hexagrams

The Gentle

Hexagram 57 is wind following wind: penetrating influence, the mild persistent pressure that reaches everywhere. The Judgment gives success through what is small, and adds that it helps to have somewhere to go and to see the great person. Gentle influence needs an aim or it is only a draught. The Image is the mechanism: the noble person repeats their instructions and carries the work through. Today, say the thing again. Whatever you have been asking for, expecting the first request to have been enough, ask a second time, in the same words, without heat. The wind does not raise its voice. It comes back.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You say a thing once, loudly, and expect it done. Today say it again, quietly. The gentle wind establishes by returning, and the loud gust only announces.

Taurus

Persistence is yours; the mildness is the addition. Today repeat the instruction without the weight behind it. Wind following wind, not a wall following a wall.

Gemini

You will say the thing again in new words. Same words today. The Gentle establishes by repetition, and variation reads as a different request.

Cancer

You ask once and then feel unheard. Today ask again, in the same tone, with no hurt in it. The wind is not offended by having to return.

Leo

Repeating yourself feels like diminishment. Today it is the mechanism. Say the instruction a second time, plainly, and it becomes established rather than performed.

Virgo

You repeat by correcting. Today repeat by repeating. The same instruction, unimproved, is what the Image means by carrying the work through.

Libra

You will soften the second request until it is no longer a request. Today keep it the same. Gentle is not vague; the wind has a direction.

Scorpio

You do not repeat; you wait and then act. Today the hexagram is the wind, not the strike. Say the thing again, mildly, and let the pressure do what force would not.

Sagittarius

You said it once and moved on. Today come back and say it again. The Judgment says it helps to have somewhere to go, and here means returning to the same place.

Capricorn

You repeat instructions as policy. Today repeat one as a person, without the memo. The Gentle is a voice, not a process, and it is heard because it comes back.

Aquarius

You will restate the principle. Today restate the instruction. The wind penetrates by being specific, and the principle is the draught the Judgment warns of.

Pisces

You ask and drift when unanswered. Today ask again, same words, same aim. The gentle influence has somewhere to go, and you have to keep pointing it there.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You will find a lever rather than repeat yourself. Today repeat. The Gentle penetrates by return, not by leverage, and the second asking is the mechanism.

Ox

You repeat by outlasting. Today repeat by saying. The same instruction, aloud, a second time, establishes what silent persistence only implies.

Tiger

You will say it once and then push. Today say it twice and do not push. Wind following wind is pressure without force, and the force undoes the wind.

Rabbit

You ask softly once and give up. Today ask softly again. The Gentle is your register with the persistence added, and the persistence is the whole hexagram.

Dragon

You issue instructions and expect them to stand. Today repeat one. The Image says an instruction given once is only announced, and that includes yours.

Snake

You influence quietly and once. Today twice. The penetrating pressure is the return, and the single quiet word is the draught.

Horse

You will say it and be gone before it landed. Today stay and say it again. The wind has somewhere to go, and it is back to the same door.

Goat

You repeat by apologising for asking. Today repeat without the apology. The same request, mild and unashamed, is what the Gentle means.

Monkey

You will rephrase brilliantly. Today rephrase not at all. The instruction repeated in the same words is what establishes it, and the variation is what loses it.

Rooster

You repeat with irritation. Today without. The Gentle does not raise its voice, and the irritation converts the wind into a gust nobody follows.

Dog

You will carry the work through and never say the instruction at all. Today say it, twice. The Image has both halves, and the saying is the one you skip.

Pig

You ask once and let it go. Today do not let it go. Ask again, kindly, and the Gentle turns your single request into an established one.
