One of the sixty-four hexagrams

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

Following

Hexagram 17 is thunder settled inside the lake, the arousing force taking the lower place. The Judgment gives Following the book's four great words: the source, it gets through, it rewards holding to the course, no blame. Adapting to circumstance is a full virtue here, not a concession. The Image makes the first application personal: at nightfall the noble person goes indoors to rest. Following the day's own rhythm, and stopping when it stops, is where the practice starts. Today, follow. Something is leading well; let it, without the commentary about whether you should. When the light goes, go in. The discrimination is in what you follow, not in whether.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You will follow for an hour and take over. Today follow to nightfall. The four great words are given to Following, not to seizing the lead by lunch.

Taurus

You follow slowly and reliably and never stop. Tonight stop. The Image is going indoors at dusk, and rest is part of the following.

Gemini

You will follow three things at once and none to the end. Today one. Thunder inside the lake is one force under one surface, and the discrimination is in the choice.

Cancer

You will follow the person rather than the thing. Today follow what is right, whoever is carrying it. The hexagram's discrimination is about the course, not the company.

Leo

Taking the lower place is the whole image and the whole difficulty for you. Today take it. Following done well earns the four great words; leading badly earns none.

Virgo

You will follow and correct the leader as you go. Today follow without the annotations. The course is held by adapting to it, not by editing it in transit.

Libra

You will follow both options to keep the balance. Today choose one to follow and go indoors when it is dark. Balance is not the virtue here; adaptation is.

Scorpio

You do not follow; you wait to lead. Today the four great words go to the follower. Take the lower place and see what it gets through to.

Sagittarius

You will follow until something more interesting passes. Today hold to the course. The Judgment rewards the holding, and the interesting thing is the test of it.

Capricorn

Following is not a strategy for you and today it is the hexagram. Adapt to what is leading well, and go in at nightfall rather than working through it.

Aquarius

You will follow the idea and not the situation. Today follow the situation. Thunder inside the lake is the arousing force taking the lower place, and the lower place is where you are.

Pisces

You follow everything and call it going with the flow. Today discriminate. The hexagram asks what you follow, and the answer should be one thing, held.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You will follow the winning side. Today follow the right one, which may be slower. The four great words go to holding the course, not to picking it late.

Ox

You follow steadily and never rest. Tonight go indoors. The Image is the day's own rhythm, and stopping when the light stops is part of the virtue.

Tiger

Following is beneath you. Today it is the hexagram, and it gets the book's four great words. Take the lower place and find out what that earns.

Rabbit

You follow by nature and today the hexagram asks you to follow with discrimination. Not everyone; the thing that is leading well. Choose, then hold.

Dragon

You lead. Today follow, and follow something worth following. Thunder inside the lake is the great force choosing the lower place, and it is not a demotion.

Snake

You follow while appearing to lead. Today follow openly. The hexagram gives no blame to the honest follower and says nothing about the disguised one.

Horse

You will follow at a gallop and overtake. Today match the pace of what leads. Following is holding to its course, and the course has a speed.

Goat

You follow the nearest voice. Today the Image asks for discrimination: follow what is right, and go indoors when the day ends rather than following into the dark.

Monkey

You will follow and improvise a shortcut. Today hold the course as given. The four great words are for the one who adapted to it, not around it.

Rooster

You will follow and grade the leader. Today follow without the grade. Adapting to circumstance is the virtue; assessing it from behind is not.

Dog

This is your hexagram: following, loyally, to the end. The addition today is the nightfall. Go indoors when it is dark and rest; loyalty is not vigilance.

Pig

You follow whatever is pleasant. Today follow what is right and pleasant if possible, right if not. The discrimination is the whole of the practice.
