Enthusiasm

Hexagram 16 is thunder bursting out of the earth: roused collective feeling, the thing that makes people move together. The classic is candid about how easily it curdles, and the Judgment treats it as a practical resource: it helps to appoint helpers and set the armies marching. When people are willing, that is the moment to organise. The Image gives the other half: the ancient kings made music to honour character, because roused feeling lasts only when given a form.
