One of the sixty-four hexagrams

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

The Family

Hexagram 37 is wind coming out of fire: influence spreading from a warm centre. It is the classic's hexagram of the household, and its argument is that public order begins in private conduct. The Image puts the whole ethic in a sentence: the noble person's words have substance and their conduct has consistency. In a household the gap between what is said and what is done is visible daily. Today, close that gap at home. Whatever you have been saying you would do for the people nearest you, do some of it, and let the influence spread outward from there rather than being performed elsewhere first.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You lead in public and improvise at home. Today the household is the arena. Do one thing you have been announcing you would do for the people in your house, and do it before noon.

Taurus

The warm centre is your natural position and today it is being asked to radiate. Do not just keep the house; let something good spread out from it. Feed people and let them leave with more than food.

Gemini

Words with substance is the instruction and words are where you are generous. Today, match one sentence with an action at home. The family notices the gap before anybody else does.

Cancer

Your hexagram, and the addition is consistency. The household knows you care; what it needs today is the same care on Tuesday as on Sunday. Do the ordinary thing reliably.

Leo

Influence spreading from the centre is a role you like. Today the centre is the kitchen, not the stage. Be consistent at home, where nobody applauds, and the outward part follows.

Virgo

You will improve the household. The hexagram asks you to be consistent in it, which is different. Today do what you said you would, exactly, and skip the upgrade.

Libra

You keep the peace at home by saying whatever keeps it. Today words have to have substance. Say the true thing, kindly, and let conduct back it up.

Scorpio

You are private at home and the hexagram is about conduct visible daily. Today let the people in your house see you do the thing you said. Consistency is the trust you have been withholding.

Sagittarius

Home is where you stop between journeys. Today stay in it and be consistent for the people there. Wind comes out of fire, and the fire has to be tended before it can send anything outward.

Capricorn

You provide for the household and skip the conduct. Today the Image asks for both: substance in what you say to them and consistency in what you do. The provision was never the whole job.

Aquarius

You will treat the family as a system to improve. It is a set of people who notice the gap between your words and your actions. Close one gap today, in person.

Pisces

You feel your way through the household and forget to state anything. Today say one plain thing to someone at home and then do it. Substance first, then atmosphere.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You run the household efficiently and the hexagram asks for warmth to spread from it. Today, do something at home that has no efficiency in it at all and see what it does to the room.

Ox

Your conduct is consistent and your words are few. Today add the words. The household needs to hear what you would do, and then watch you do it, both halves.

Tiger

You are dramatic at home and consistent nowhere. Today reverse it. One reliable, ordinary act for the people in your house, repeated tomorrow, is the whole of this hexagram.

Rabbit

The warm centre is yours and it is where you are strongest. Today let its influence spread past the front door. What you keep well at home is something other people could use.

Dragon

You will make a pronouncement to the household. Make a promise instead, a small one, and keep it before evening. Substance is measured at home by what happens after the speech.

Snake

You keep the household calm by managing what it knows. Today the hexagram asks for words with substance: say the real thing to the people at home and let them handle it.

Horse

You are rarely home long enough for consistency. Be home today. Wind comes out of fire, and you cannot spread influence from a centre you are never at.

Goat

You tend the household constantly and say almost nothing about what you need from it. Today say one thing with substance. Consistency runs both ways in this hexagram.

Monkey

You entertain the household and rarely follow through for it. Today one promise kept beats a week of being fun. The gap between saying and doing is what they remember.

Rooster

Your household runs on your standards. Today run it on your conduct instead: do the thing you would correct someone else for skipping, without commentary.

Dog

This is your hexagram: loyalty at home, consistency, words that mean what they say. The addition is that the influence is meant to spread. Take what works in your house and show someone outside it.

Pig

The household is where you are most generous and least consistent. Today be reliable at home for one ordinary thing. The warmth is already there; the hexagram wants it steady.
