One of the sixty-four hexagrams

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

Waiting

Hexagram 5 is clouds gathered with the rain not yet fallen. The classic treats waiting as an active skill rather than a gap between actions, and the Judgment is confident: you are sincere, radiant success, steadfastness brings good fortune. The Image is the most cheerful instruction in the book. Clouds rise to heaven, so the noble person eats and drinks and is glad. Today, something you are waiting for cannot be hurried and does not need to be. The delay is not a doubt about the outcome. The correct use of the interval is to live in it: have the meal, keep the appointment, be pleasant company. The rain is coming.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

Waiting is the one skill the book says you lack, and today is a lesson in it. Do not go and stand under the cloud. Eat, drink, be glad, and let the rain arrive without your help.

Taurus

You wait well and the hexagram says so. The instruction is not to wait grimly. Today enjoy the interval, since the outcome is already settled and the meal is in front of you.

Gemini

You will fill the wait with talk about the wait. Fill it with lunch instead. The rain is coming, the noble person is glad, and nothing about the timing responds to commentary.

Cancer

You wait anxiously, and the Judgment removes the anxiety: you are sincere, the success is radiant. Today believe that and set the table. The interval is for living, not for bracing.

Leo

Waiting without an audience feels like being forgotten. It is not. Today the clouds are gathering on your behalf and the correct posture is to be good company while they do.

Virgo

You will use the wait to prepare for the rain. Prepare once and stop. The hexagram's instruction is to eat and drink and be glad, and preparation past a point is a way of not doing that.

Libra

You wait by weighing whether the wait is worthwhile. It is. Today put the question down and enjoy the interval, which is what the Image actually asks.

Scorpio

You wait with intent and the hexagram wants you to wait with pleasure. Try it for one day. The outcome is fixed, the rain is scheduled, and the meal is real.

Sagittarius

You will leave to find the rain somewhere else. Stay. It is coming here, and the book is explicit that crossing the great water is helped by having waited well first.

Capricorn

Waiting is not idleness and you will treat it as idleness. Today it is the correct action. Have the meal you would normally skip and call it what the classic calls it: good fortune.

Aquarius

You will explain why the rain has not come yet. The reason is simply that it has not. Today the interval is for living, and the explanation can wait with everything else.

Pisces

You wait easily, sometimes too easily. The hexagram gives you a spine: steadfastness brings good fortune. Wait today with a direction in mind, gladly, and the rain finds you ready.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You will use the wait to reposition. Do not. Today the position is right and the timing is the sky's. Eat and drink and let the clouds do their part without your management.

Ox

Waiting is your strength and today the hexagram adds cheer to it. Do not wait like a wall. Have the meal, be glad, and the rain comes to someone at ease rather than someone braced.

Tiger

You cannot wait and today you must. The hexagram is kind about it: the outcome is already good and the interval is for dinner. Take the day off from forcing things.

Rabbit

You wait watchfully, ready to run. Today nothing is chasing. Sit at the table, eat properly, and let the rain arrive on a day you spent being pleasant company.

Dragon

Waiting feels like being ignored by the sky. The sky is busy gathering the rain you asked for. Today, be gracious in the interval and it will notice.

Snake

You wait strategically. Today wait gladly. The Image is a meal and a good mood, and the strategy is already done; the clouds are up.

Horse

You will leave before the rain to find it faster elsewhere. It is coming here. Stay at the table today and the crossing that follows will be the easy kind.

Goat

You wait for others to decide when the wait is over. The sky decides. Today, enjoy the interval on your own account and stop asking whether it is time.

Monkey

You will invent something to do while waiting and it will be a distraction disguised as productivity. Eat and drink instead. The hexagram is serious about being glad.

Rooster

You will check the clouds every twenty minutes. Check once. Today the rain is scheduled by something you do not control, and the meal is scheduled by you.

Dog

You wait faithfully and forget to enjoy the waiting. Today the Image is the point: sit, eat, be glad. The rain is a certainty and the faithfulness has already done its work.

Pig

This is your Image exactly: eat, drink, be glad while the clouds gather. Take the day as given. The only addition is to be steadfast about the thing you are waiting for, so the rain finds you still here.
