Diamond is pure carbon crystallised under enormous pressure at depths of one hundred and fifty kilometres or more, and carried to the surface by violent kimberlite eruptions. Most diamonds are between one and three billion years old, which makes them the oldest objects most people will ever touch.

Its hardness of 10 is unmatched among natural materials, and the Mohs scale is ordinal rather than linear, so diamond is several times harder than corundum at 9 rather than one step above it. The name comes from the Greek adamas, meaning unconquerable, which is also the root of adamant.

The older lists and the modern campaign

Traditional lists mostly agree on diamond, with sapphire and clear stones appearing as alternates in some regional variants.

The claim that diamond means eternal love is not traditional at all. Diamonds were rare in Europe until Brazilian and then South African discoveries, engagement rings were not commonly diamond, and the modern association was manufactured. In 1947 Frances Gerety, a copywriter at the N. W. Ayer agency working for De Beers, wrote the line a diamond is forever, and a sustained campaign over decades tied diamonds to engagement in the United States, then in Japan, where diamond engagement rings went from almost nonexistent in the 1960s to a majority within twenty years.

This is the best-documented case anywhere of a stone meaning being deliberately created, and any account calling it ancient is wrong.

Older beliefs did exist. Pliny records diamond as proof against poison, and Indian tradition, where diamonds were first mined in Golconda, assigns it to Venus in the navaratna.

What diamond is actually like to own

Extremely hard and not indestructible. Diamond has perfect cleavage in four directions, which is what cutters exploit, and a sharp knock on a girdle can chip or split a stone. It survives everything else, can be steam cleaned, and does not scratch in ordinary wear.

The market questions matter more than the material ones. Laboratory-grown diamond is real diamond, chemically and structurally identical, produced by high-pressure and chemical vapour deposition methods, and it must be disclosed as such. It costs a fraction of mined stone.

Origin is the harder question. The Kimberley Process addresses conflict financing but not labour conditions or environmental impact, and its adequacy is disputed. If provenance matters to you, ask for it in writing and consider laboratory-grown or recycled stones.

If you would rather have something else

Clear quartz, white sapphire and white topaz all appear in older lists and cost a tiny fraction as much, and rock crystal has a far longer documented history in amulet use than diamond does.

April's signs are Aries and Taurus. Zodiac lists give Aries carnelian, bloodstone or diamond, and Taurus emerald or rose quartz.

In Jyotish, Taurus is ruled by Venus, whose gem is diamond, so an April Taurus is one of the few cases where the Western month list and the Vedic prescription point at the same stone. Aries answers to Mars and red coral.
