The cycles

The positions describe a shape. The cycles describe a schedule. This is the half of numerology that answers when: which year you are in, which long chapter you are living through, which difficulty is currently being handed to you, and when each of them turns over.

The half of numerology that answers when

A chart position is fixed. A Life Path 7 is a Life Path 7 at nine and at ninety, and nothing in the static layer says whether this is a good year to start a business. That is what the cycles are for, and confusing the two is the most common error in amateur readings: treating a permanent position as a forecast, or treating a Personal Year as a personality.

The cycles divide into two kinds, and they behave quite differently. The short cycles are nested and calendar-driven: a Personal Year sets a theme, a Personal Month narrows it, a Personal Day narrows it again. The long cycles are biographical: the Period Cycles, Pinnacles and Challenges carve a life into chapters that last decades and turn over only a handful of times.

The nine-year rhythm

Almost everything in the short cycles is a nine-step pattern. A Personal Year cycle runs 1 through 9 and then begins again, and the shape of it is consistent across the literature: 1 begins, 2 waits and gathers allies, 3 expresses, 4 works, 5 disrupts, 6 takes responsibility, 7 withdraws and examines, 8 harvests, 9 clears out to make room for the next 1.

That sequence is the same set of meanings the numbers carry everywhere else in numerology, applied to time instead of to a person. If you know what a 4 is, you know what a 4 year is: not a good year for a leap, an excellent year to build the thing you leapt into during the 1.

Where the schedules disagree

Two genuine disputes are worth knowing before you calculate anything.

The first is when a Personal Year starts. Most practitioners run it from 1 January, which keeps the arithmetic clean. A substantial minority run it from the person's birthday, on the argument that a personal cycle should turn on a personal date, and a third group blends the two by treating the months around the birthday as a transition. The three conventions can put you in different years for months at a time.

The second is the age at which the first Pinnacle ends. The common formula subtracts the Life Path from 36, so a Life Path 7 changes Pinnacle at 29 and a Life Path 2 at 34. Some schools use 35 or 37 as the base, which shifts every subsequent boundary. Neither dispute has an authority to settle it, so the honest approach is to say which convention you are using.

Reading the layers together

A cycle reading is only interesting against the static chart. A 5 year is disruptive for everybody, but a 5 year arriving in the middle of a 4 Pinnacle for someone with a Life Path 4 describes a very particular kind of unwelcome interruption, and the same year for a Life Path 5 in a 5 Pinnacle describes something closer to a release.

The useful order is: read the long cycle first to find the chapter, then the Personal Year to find the task, and only then the month and the day. Reading the day first is how people end up making large decisions on the basis of the smallest number in the system.
