The Essence
Also called: Transits, Essence number
The only cycle drawn from the name rather than the birth date. Each letter governs as many years as its value, the three names run concurrently at different speeds, and the sum of whichever letters are active gives the year's Essence.

How to calculate your Essence
- Take your first name and convert each letter to its Pythagorean value. Each letter governs a number of years equal to its value, running from birth in the order the letters appear.
- Do the same for your middle name and for your surname, each starting again from birth and running independently.
- When a name is exhausted, it starts again from its first letter, so each name repeats on a cycle equal to the sum of its letters.
- For any age, find which letter of each name is active. These three are your transit letters.
- Add the three transit letters and reduce. That is your Essence for the year.
Worked example
Maya June Ellerton, at age 30
| MAYA | M4 A1 Y7 A1, cycle of 13 years; age 30 falls in the second A | A = 1 |
|---|---|---|
| JUNE | J1 U3 N5 E5, cycle of 14 years; age 30 falls in the U | U = 3 |
| ELLERTON | E5 L3 L3 E5 R9 T2 O6 N5, cycle of 38 years; age 30 falls in the O | O = 6 |
| Total | 1 + 3 + 6 | 10 → 1 |
Essence 1 at age 30
The three names run at different speeds because their letter sums differ: 13, 14 and 38 years respectively here. That is why the Essence changes irregularly rather than annually, and why two people with the same Life Path can have completely different Essence sequences. A long surname changes slowly and a short first name cycles several times over a lifetime.
How the transits actually run
Three independent clocks started at birth, each stepping through its own name at its own pace. The Essence changes whenever any one of them ticks over.
The first-name transit
FastestCycle length = sum of the first name's letters
Usually the shortest cycle, often repeating three or four times across a life. Read as the personal and immediate layer of a period.
The middle-name transit
MiddleCycle length = sum of the middle name's letters
Where there is no middle name, most practitioners simply use two transits. Where there are several, each gets its own clock and the Essence sums them all.
The surname transit
SlowestCycle length = sum of the surname's letters
The longest cycle, often running most of a lifetime before repeating. Read as the inherited and structural layer, and it changes rarely enough that its turnover is usually noticeable.
A single long letter
Up to nine yearsA letter with value 9, such as R or I
The extreme case. An R or an I governs nine consecutive years of its name's transit, which is longer than an entire Pinnacle boundary in some charts.
Because the clocks are independent, an Essence can hold for several years or change two years running. Irregularity is a feature of the construction, not an error in your arithmetic.
What it describes
The Essence describes the flavour of a specific stretch of years, and it is the only timing calculation in numerology that comes from the name rather than the date.
That makes it structurally different from everything else in this layer. Personal Years, Pinnacles, Challenges and Period Cycles are all arithmetic on a birth date, so they are all in some sense the same information rearranged. The Essence introduces a genuinely independent input, which is the strongest argument for calculating it despite the effort.
What it claims is that the letters of a name are consumed over a lifetime at a rate set by their own values, and that whichever letters are currently being lived through colour the period. It is the most intricate idea in popular numerology and the one least often calculated correctly.
Where it comes from
Each letter is given a duration equal to its numerical value, so an A governs one year and an R governs nine. The letters of a name are worked through in order from birth, and when the name is exhausted it begins again.
The three names run as three independent clocks, all started at birth, each with its own period equal to the sum of its letters. The Essence for a given year is the sum of the currently active letter from each.
The method is sometimes called transits, on an explicit analogy with astrological transits, and the borrowing is acknowledged in the literature. The analogy is loose: an astrological transit is a real planetary position and a letter transit is a bookkeeping convention. But the interpretive move is the same, which is to ask what is currently passing over a fixed natal picture.
It is worth knowing that this is the most elaborate calculation in the field and that practitioners disagree about several of its details, including how to handle names with no middle name and whether a changed surname starts its own clock.
How to read it
Read the Essence against the Personal Year, since both describe a single stretch of time and they frequently disagree. The tradition treats agreement as reinforcement and disagreement as the more informative case: an 8 Essence in a 4 Personal Year describes material opportunity arriving during a year built for grinding, which is a specific and recognisable kind of frustration.
Read a long transit as a chapter. A nine-year letter is a substantial period, and where a 9-value letter in the surname coincides with a Pinnacle boundary the two together mark a genuinely significant transition.
The honest caution is that this calculation is intricate enough that arithmetic errors are common, and its readings are correspondingly harder to check. Verify the cycle lengths first, since a wrong cycle length puts every subsequent year wrong.
Common misreadings
The first error is arithmetic, and it is very common. Each name has its own cycle length, so all three have to be tracked separately, and it is easy to lose position over a fifty-year run. Compute the cycle lengths first and check that they sum correctly.
The second is starting the clocks anywhere other than birth. All three transits begin at age zero regardless of when a person started using a name.
The third is the missing middle name. Practitioners with no middle name typically use two transits, though some insert the surname twice and others use a single-letter placeholder. There is no settled convention, and the choice changes every Essence, so it should be stated.
The fourth is over-reading. This is a supporting calculation, and the effort it takes tends to inflate people's confidence in the result. The Personal Year is a simpler number with better support behind it, and where the two conflict, most practitioners weight the year.
How it interacts with the rest of the chart
The Essence is the only bridge between the name-derived half of a chart and the timing layer, which gives it a particular use: it is the one calculation that can say when something in the name becomes active.
Against the Personal Year it is the primary comparison, since the two cover the same span from different sources. Practitioners who use both read the Personal Year as the task and the Essence as the material available for it.
Against the Karmic Lessons there is a specific and useful case. A transit letter supplying a digit that is otherwise missing from the name is read as the missing capability becoming temporarily available, which is one of the few genuinely non-obvious statements in numerology, though it can only happen when the missing digit appears in another name than the one it is missing from.
Against the Pinnacles and Period Cycles, treat the Essence as detail within a chapter rather than as a rival account of it.
Across the systems
Pythagorean. Standard in the fuller modern Western chart, though far less commonly calculated than the Personal Year or the Pinnacles, largely because of the arithmetic involved.
Chaldean. No equivalent, despite that tradition's much greater interest in names. Chaldean practice reads a name as a fixed total rather than as something consumed over time.
Vedic. No equivalent in numerology. The name-based timing that does exist in Indian practice runs through the nakshatra syllable a name is chosen from, which links a name to an astrological position rather than to a schedule.
Hebrew. Gematria has no temporal dimension of this kind. A word's value is a static property, and the tradition's interest is in equivalences between words rather than in a value unfolding across a life.
The borrowing. The term transit is taken directly from astrology, and the Essence is best understood as an attempt to give numerology the moving layer that astrology has natively. Whether it succeeds is a fair question, and its relative unpopularity among practitioners is some evidence.
Every number as an Essence
One line each for the material the period makes available. Follow any of them for the full reading of that number.
- Essence 1 A period whose material is initiative and independence. New beginnings are available whether or not the year's task calls for them.
- Essence 2 A period coloured by relationship and patience. Progress comes through others, and solitary effort feels obstructed.
- Essence 3 A period of expression and sociability. Creative output comes easily; concentration does not.
- Essence 4 A period of work and structure. Demanding, unglamorous and productive, and the material for building anything durable.
- Essence 5 A period coloured by change and appetite. Movement is available, and so is the excess that goes with it.
- Essence 6 A period of responsibility, home and other people's needs. Domestic matters take on unusual weight.
- Essence 7 A period of study and withdrawal. Understanding is available; visible progress is generally not.
- Essence 8 A period whose material is money, authority and consequence. The most sought-after Essence and the most demanding.
- Essence 9 A period of endings and wider concerns. Things conclude, and holding on is unusually costly.
- Essence 11/2 The 2's material at high voltage: perception, sensitivity and inspiration, with the nervous cost attached.
- Essence 22/4 The 4's material at scale. Rare, and read as a period in which something structurally large can genuinely be attempted.
An Essence cannot be 0, since every letter carries a value. Master numbers are kept where the three transits happen to total one, which is uncommon.
Questions for reflection
- Which letter of each of my names am I currently living through?
- Does my Essence agree with my Personal Year, and if not, which one describes this year better?
- When did my surname transit last change, and did anything mark it?
