The Tianqiao Acrobat

Tarot: Friday, September 18

A card drawn from one of three decks

The Tianqiao Acrobat

The Tarot of Beijing
The Tianqiao Acrobat

At the old Tianqiao grounds an acrobat hangs upside down from a bamboo frame, stopped in the middle of his act, drinking tea while coins fall past his face. The crowd sees a stunt. He sees the Drum Tower and the sky the right way up for the first time. This is the Hanged Man in the deck's own clothes, and today it means your act has paused mid-motion. Do not scramble to restart it. The pause is a vantage point, and the thing you could not see while performing is visible from here. Drink the tea. Look at the tower.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

Suspended is the one position you have no technique for. Today it is the only position on offer. Stop trying to swing back upright and look at what the inverted view shows you.

Taurus

You will hang there patiently and learn nothing, because patience is not the same as looking. The acrobat is not waiting. He is seeing. Use the stillness for the second thing.

Gemini

You will describe the view to the crowd instead of looking at it. Say nothing for an hour today. What the inverted city shows you is lost the moment it becomes an anecdote.

Cancer

Being suspended feels like being abandoned mid-act. The acrobat chose the frame. Choose it too today, and the pause stops being something done to you.

Leo

The crowd thinks it is a stunt and you would like it to be one. It is not. Today the performance has stopped and what remains is the private view from the frame. Take it seriously.

Virgo

You will use the pause to audit the act. The card asks for the opposite: stop analysing the performance and look at the tower. The audit is available any day; the view is not.

Libra

Upside down, both sides of every question change places. Today let them. The balance you strike from the frame will be different from the one you struck standing, and that is the point.

Scorpio

You have been suspended before and used it to plan. This time the card wants no plan. Hang, watch, and let the coins fall past. Something is being shown that a plan would obscure.

Sagittarius

A pause is your idea of a punishment. Today it is a rare seat. The whole city is visible from the frame and you will only see it if you stop trying to get down.

Capricorn

Stopping mid-act reads to you as failure of execution. It is not. The acrobat is mid-act by design. Take the day suspended and let the schedule wait at the bottom of the frame.

Aquarius

You will find the inverted view interesting as a concept. Look at it as a fact. The tower is actually the right way up from here and that tells you something about where you stand normally.

Pisces

You are comfortable upside down, perhaps too comfortable. The card is a pause, not a residence. Drink the tea, take the view, and know which act you are going back to.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

Coins are falling past your face and you cannot catch them from here. Do not try. Today the view is worth more than the coins, and you can gather them when you are down.

Ox

You hold the position without complaint and that is half the card. The other half is seeing something from it. Look at what has changed shape now that you are inverted.

Tiger

Being stopped mid-leap is the worst thing you can imagine and today it is the plan. Hold still. The pause has a duration and fighting it only extends it.

Rabbit

You are suspended and the crowd is watching, which is the whole of your nightmare. They see a stunt. Let them. What you see from the frame is yours alone.

Dragon

The act stopped and you feel the audience drifting. The acrobat does not care. Today what matters is what the tower looks like from here, and it does not look like a throne.

Snake

You already live at a slight angle to everyone else and this card tips it to the full inversion. Use the day to see what the ordinary angle was hiding. Then come back down quietly.

Horse

The frame holds you and you want to run. There is nowhere to run to from upside down. Accept the day as a stop and the stop begins to show you the route.

Goat

You would rather someone told you when to come down. Nobody will. The acrobat chooses the moment himself, and today that decision is yours to make and to delay.

Monkey

You will turn the suspension into a performance and the crowd will love it. Do not perform today. The trick is not the point; the view is, and you cannot see it while entertaining.

Rooster

The act was going well and it stopped, which offends you. Let it. A pause is not a flaw in the routine. Use it to see whether the routine was pointed at anything.

Dog

You feel you have let the crowd down by stopping. You have not. Today's stillness is the act. Watch the tower and let the coins fall; nobody is keeping score.

Pig

Tea while inverted is a pleasant image and you will enjoy it. Enjoy it and also look. The card gives you comfort in the pause and asks that you use the pause for something.
