Beorc is the birch, which the poem describes as bearing no fruit and putting out shoots anyway. Something today produces growth without producing a result, and that is not failure. Green wood is what next year is made from. Let the thing be unproductive and alive rather than forcing it to show a yield it does not have yet.
Fern is the alder: the wood that stands between you and the blow, used for shields because it takes the impact without splitting. Today something is absorbing damage on your behalf, possibly a person. Notice it. Protection that works is nearly invisible, and the usual way it ends is that nobody thanked whoever was doing it.
