One of the sixty-four hexagrams

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

Nourishment

Hexagram 27 looks like a jaw: solid lines top and bottom, open in between. It is about nourishment in every sense, and the Judgment asks two questions rather than one. Watch how nourishment is provided, and what a person seeks to fill their own mouth with. The Image joins the two jobs of the mouth into one discipline: the noble person is careful with words and temperate in eating and drinking. Today, notice what you go looking for. Not what you are given, but what you reach for when nobody is offering. Then apply the same care to what you say as to what you eat.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You reach for the fast thing, in food and in words. Today watch the reaching. The hexagram says what you seek to fill your mouth with reveals more than what you are given.

Taurus

Nourishment is your subject and the Image adds words to it. Today be as temperate in speech as at table. The jaw does both, and you govern only one.

Gemini

The mouth's second job is your whole life and the first you neglect. Today be careful with words and eat properly. The hexagram treats them as one discipline.

Cancer

You feed everyone and reach for comfort yourself. Today notice the reaching. What you seek when nobody is offering is the question the classic thinks matters.

Leo

You feed on attention. Today watch what you go looking for when none is offered. The hexagram's second question is about exactly that reaching.

Virgo

You are temperate in eating and sharp in words. Today the discipline is one. Careful with words, the Image says, in the same breath as the food.

Libra

You seek what others are eating. Today notice what you would choose alone. The Judgment is interested in the reaching, not the sharing.

Scorpio

You consume in private and speak little. Today the hexagram asks what you reach for in that privacy. The answer is the reading.

Sagittarius

You fill your mouth with the next thing before finishing this one. Today watch that. Nourishment is provided in its own time, and the reaching ahead is the tell.

Capricorn

You eat to work and speak to instruct. Today both are nourishment. Be temperate in each and notice which one you reach for when the day is hard.

Aquarius

You feed on ideas and skip meals. Today the jaw is literal. Eat properly, speak carefully, and notice which of the two you actually neglect.

Pisces

You are fed by atmosphere and reach for whatever is near. Today watch the reaching. What you seek to fill yourself with is the question, and the answer is specific.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You reach for whatever is available and fast. Today watch what you seek when nothing is. The hexagram's second question is the one that reveals you.

Ox

You eat steadily and say little, which is half the discipline. Today notice what you reach for when the routine breaks. That reaching is the reading.

Tiger

You devour. Today be temperate, in food and in speech, and notice what you go looking for. The jaw is one instrument and you use it at full force.

Rabbit

You are careful in eating and careful in speech, and the hexagram asks a harder question: what do you reach for when unobserved? Today find the answer.

Dragon

You are fed richly and speak grandly. Today watch what you seek to fill your mouth with when the feast is over. The classic thinks that reveals more.

Snake

You reach for little and reveal less. Today the hexagram asks what the little is. Be honest about the reaching; it says what the silence does not.

Horse

You eat on the move and talk on the move. Today stop for both. The Image is temperance, and temperance requires standing still.

Goat

You are fed by others and rarely reach for yourself. Today notice what you would seek alone. The Judgment asks what you fill your own mouth with, not what is put in it.

Monkey

You fill your mouth with clever words. Today be careful with them. The hexagram governs speech alongside food, and yours is the richer diet.

Rooster

You are exact about what others eat and say. Today watch your own reaching. The second question is about you, and it is the one the classic values.

Dog

You feed others first and reach for scraps. Today notice the scraps. What you seek for yourself is the reading, and it should be better than that.

Pig

This is your hexagram: nourishment, the full mouth. Today the Image adds the words. Be as careful in speech as you are generous at table, and notice what you reach for.
