Fifth layer

The etheric template

The first of the outer three, structured like the first layer and said to hold the pattern the etheric body copies. Paired with the throat, the centre where something formed inwardly is given a shape others can receive.

A pattern rather than a thing

The model repeats itself outward: layers one, three, five and seven are structured; layers two, four and six are fluid. The etheric template is the fifth, and its usual description is unusual enough to be worth noting. Practitioners describe it not as lines but as the space those lines occupy, a negative in the photographic sense from which the first layer is printed.

Whether that description is doing conceptual work or is simply vivid is hard to say from the outside.

Its pairing

Vishuddha governs the moment something internal takes an external form: a feeling becomes a sentence, a sound becomes a word. Pairing the template layer with the throat follows the same idea one level up, where a pattern becomes a body.
