The conjunction

Fusion at zero degrees

The conjunction is the configuration of co-presence: two planets at the same degree of the zodiac, their functions fused into one compound force. Strictly, the old doctrine did not count it an aspect at all, aspects are lines of sight between separated bodies, while conjoined planets do not see each other; they share a room, and everything each does engages the other. The distinction survives in how conjunctions read: not dialogue, cooperation or friction, the vocabulary of the true aspects, but amalgamation, a Venus–Mars person does not negotiate between love and desire; they own an alloy. It is the strongest single statement a chart can make, and the oldest: Babylon's watchers logged planetary meetings nightly for centuries before geometric aspects were invented, as this compendium's Babylonian pages show.

Character by cast

The conjunction is classified neither soft nor hard, because its angle contributes only intensity; its character comes wholly from the planets fused. The benefic meetings are the tradition's festivals: Venus–Jupiter, grace multiplied by abundance; Sun–Jupiter, confidence enthroned. The malefic ones are its ordeals and its engines: Mars–Saturn, the classic forced march, drive against discipline until the two become endurance; Saturn–Pluto, the era-marking compression. Mixed casts blend accordingly, Moon–Saturn feels dutifully, Mercury–Neptune thinks in images, and the luminaries dignify whatever they touch. The reading rule is constant: name the planets, blend their natures without remainder, and place the compound in its sign and house, the conjunction does the rest.

The solar special cases

Conjunction with the Sun carries its own ancient doctrine, described also on Mercury's page, where it matters most. A planet within roughly eight degrees of the Sun is combust: burned invisible, as planets near the Sun genuinely vanish in his glare, its significations traditionally weakened, the voice drowned in the identity. But a planet within about a sixth of a degree, in the Sun's very heart, is cazimi: crowned, the function seated in the throne room, the tradition's favourite exception that outranks the rule. And the Sun–Moon conjunction is the New Moon, the lights fused at the month's dark seed: natives of it run will and feeling as one current; electional practice plants beginnings there, at the root of the cycle.

Stelliums and the crowd in one room

Three or more planets conjoined, or gathered in one sign and house, form a stellium: a compound of compounds. The chart's mass concentrates, and the reading follows: enormous force in one department of life, a vocation more than a trait, paid for by the empty rooms elsewhere, the specialist's chart, with the specialist's brilliance and lopsidedness. Stellium natives experience the involved planets as a single weather system; the astrologer's service is to unbraid the strands far enough to name them, then braid them back, because the configuration will always act as one.

The great conjunctions: history's clock

The conjunction's grandest office is mundane. Jupiter and Saturn, the two slowest classical planets, meet every twenty years, and their meetings step through the zodiac in a stately geometry: roughly two centuries in the signs of one element, then a shift to the next, the cycle medieval astrology called the great mutations. On this clock the Persian, Arabic and Latin traditions timed dynasties, religions and eras, the most ambitious historical astrology ever practised, and the doctrine retains its followers: the 2020 great conjunction at zero degrees of Aquarius, closing two centuries of earth-sign meetings and opening the air series, was the most discussed astrological event of its decade. Whatever one makes of the claims, the twenty-year pulse of Jupiter–Saturn meetings remains the longest continuously observed rhythm in astrology, Babylon's diaries logged them too.

Working rules and natal reading

Conjunctions operate within the widest orbs of any configuration, eight to ten degrees where a luminary is involved, six to eight otherwise, tightening as exactness nears; applying conjunctions, still closing, carry matters yet to unfold, while separating ones describe accomplished facts, a distinction horary practice enforces strictly and natal practice uses as nuance. Natally, the conjunction is a compound instrument its owner cannot decompose: the Moon–Mars native feels as fight and must learn that the fusion is not the world's; the Venus–Saturn native loves as duty and must learn the alloy's warmth. The work is never separation, the planets will not separate, but orchestration: playing the fused instrument as the single thing it is. By transit, the conjunction is every cycle's zero point: the transiting planet's meeting with a natal one seeds their next round together, from Jupiter's twelve-year returns of growth to Saturn's twenty-nine-year audits, and all phase-based technique counts from it.
