Scorpio lists reach for obsidian more than anything else, which is unusual, because obsidian is volcanic glass rather than a crystal. It is also the stone Aztec priests polished into scrying mirrors, which is a better argument for the assignment than most zodiac reasoning manages.

Obsidian heads most modern Scorpio lists. It is not a mineral: it is silica-rich lava cooled too fast for atoms to arrange themselves into a crystal structure, and it is therefore a glass.

The reasoning is partly colour, since black suits a sign associated with what is hidden, and partly the mirror. Polished obsidian was the scrying surface of Mesoamerica, the instrument of Tezcatlipoca, whose name means smoking mirror, and one such mirror later belonged to John Dee and sits in the British Museum today.

Red coral is prescribed for courage, physical vitality and the strength of the body. Two cautions apply: precious coral colonies grow slowly and are under harvesting pressure, and a large share of what is sold is dyed bamboo coral or reconstituted powder in resin.

Where coral is unsuitable, red carnelian is sometimes accepted as a substitute for Mars.

Malachite appears frequently in modern Scorpio lists and is the most visually striking option, with the caution that it is a copper carbonate and should never be soaked or made into a drinking elixir.

Topaz is the older assignment, borrowed from November, and it is durable at hardness 8 as long as you respect its cleavage.

Garnet suits the Mars reasoning and is far tougher than obsidian.

Black tourmaline is the practical version of the obsidian assignment, at hardness 7.5 rather than 5.5, and it will not chip into sharp edges in a pocket.
