Why do different sources give different birthstones for this month?

Because they are copying different lists without saying which. The modern American list of 1912 and its revisions, older European traditional lists, and various regional lists all disagree, and none of them is an authority over the others. Any page presenting one answer as the birthstone is hiding a real disagreement.

Where did the modern birthstone list come from?

The American National Association of Jewelers agreed a standard list in 1912 so that shops in different states would stock and advertise the same stones. It was revised in 1952, tanzanite was added to December in 2002, and spinel to August in 2016. It is a commercial standard, and it works well as one.

How do I know if my ruby is glass-filled?

Look under magnification for gas bubbles inside the fractures and for a blue or orange flash as you rotate the stone. Price is the first warning: a large clean ruby at a low price is almost always filled. A gemmologist can confirm it in minutes, and it matters because filled stones are fragile and worth far less.

Ruby holds July across every list, and it is one of the few birthstones that arrives with a serious prescriptive tradition attached. In Jyotish it is ratnaraj, the king of gems, assigned to the Sun and prescribed from a chart rather than from a calendar. It is also the gem with the largest fraud problem in the trade.

The modern answer

Ruby, in the 1912 list and every version since, and in the traditional European lists too.

Ruby is red corundum, aluminium oxide coloured by chromium, at hardness 9. Every other colour of corundum is called sapphire, and where pink becomes red enough to be called ruby is a trade convention that varies by market, which means the same stone can change name and price by crossing a border.

The classic material comes from the marble-hosted deposits of the Mogok valley in Myanmar, where limestone containing traces of chromium was metamorphosed. Mozambique became a major source from around 2009 and now supplies much of the market.

The older lists

Traditional lists agree on ruby. Older alternates in some regional lists include carnelian and onyx, both of which are far cheaper red and dark stones that stood in where ruby was unavailable.

Sanskrit texts call ruby ratnaraj, the king of gems, and in the navaratna it answers to the Sun, prescribed for authority, vitality, the father and public standing. The prescription is specific about weight, metal, finger and the day and hour of first wearing, and a Jyotish astrologer may advise against it entirely depending on the strength of the Sun in the chart.

Burmese tradition held that a ruby inserted beneath the skin made a warrior invulnerable, which is recorded here as history rather than repeated as advice.

Medieval European lapidaries gave ruby the power to warn of danger by darkening, and to preserve the wearer's health and estate.

What ruby is actually like to own

Physically it is one of the best stones in the calendar: hardness 9, no cleavage though it has parting planes, and excellent resistance to daily wear. An untreated or simply heated ruby can be worn indefinitely in a ring.

The market is the problem. Heat treatment is near-universal and accepted when disclosed. Beryllium diffusion pushes colour into a surface layer and must be disclosed. Glass filling is the serious one: fractured low-grade corundum flooded with lead glass to look solid, sold widely as ruby, worth a small fraction of untreated stone, and easily damaged by household acids and by a jeweller's torch.

Under magnification glass filling shows gas bubbles and a blue flash along the fractures. If a ruby was cheap and looks very clean, assume filling until a gemmologist says otherwise.

Synthetic ruby has been made since Verneuil's process in 1902 and is produced in enormous quantity.

If you would rather have something else

Garnet and red jasper are the honest cheap alternatives, and both are far less likely to be misrepresented.

July covers Cancer and Leo. Zodiac lists give Cancer moonstone or pearl and Leo ruby, which agrees with the calendar for the second half of the month.

In Jyotish, Leo is ruled by the Sun, whose gem is ruby, so a July Leo receives the same answer from the Western calendar and the Vedic system. Cancer answers to the Moon and pearl. This is one of the strongest agreements in the whole birthstone scheme, and it exists because both systems associate the height of summer with the Sun.
