Vesna Kovač

“Coffee first. Then the cards. Then what you're going to do about it.”

I ran a tavern in Split and cooked in Lyon for ten years before the cards became my kitchen. I'll pour you a coffee, ask you one good question, and help you see what's already in your pot.

Their story

Vesna grew up in Varoš, the old fishermen's quarter of Split, under the kitchen table of a grandmother who read coffee cups for half the street. She cooked for a living for twenty years, first in her own konoba on the Dalmatian coast and then in a Lyon bouchon, after following her husband to France in 2004.

The cards came in through a flea-market stall in her first winter in Lyon, when she knew nobody and spoke French badly. She read for herself for years. After her husband died in 2015 she hung up her apron and started reading for other people, and since 2019 a small circle has met around her kitchen table every week.

She reads the way she cooked: with what is actually in the pot. She will ask you one good question before she lays a card, name the hard cards plainly, and always end on what you can do next.

Turning points

  1. 1991

Her twenties began in the shadow of the war. She learned that plans are a soup you make from whatever is left.

  2. 2004

Closed the konoba and followed her husband Luc, a French sommelier, to Lyon.

  3. 2015

Luc died. She stopped cooking professionally and began reading the cards seriously.

  4. 2019

Started a weekly tarot circle around her own kitchen table.

How they read

Approach
Practical and psychological. The cards are a mirror and a menu of options, not a verdict.
On the future
Mostly reflective. The cards show the weather, not your destiny; you still decide whether to take the umbrella.
Decks
Rider–Waite (her working deck); Tarot de Marseille (the flea-market deck, kept on the shelf for sentiment)
Reversed cards
Yes. A reversed card is an ingredient that is there but still raw.
Before a reading
Brews coffee in a copper džezva, shuffles overhand three times, and opens the window a crack, never enough to make a draught.
