“Every story has a next episode. Let's read yours.”

I spent seven years in TV drama writing rooms, where every scene has to earn the next one. Now I write webtoons, and I read the cards the same way: tell me where your story is, and we'll look at what this episode is really about.

Their story

Han Ji-ho grew up in Nampo-dong in Busan, a few streets from Jagalchi fish market, where his mother ran a small grilled-fish restaurant. His grandmother read the family's year from the Tojeong Bigyeol every Lunar New Year, and his mother saw a saju reader before his university exams. He moved to Seoul in 2010 to study Korean literature and spent seven years as an assistant writer on TV dramas.

The cards came to him through a writing room in 2016, when a senior writer pulled one for each character in a stuck storyline. He used his first deck on fictional people for three years before he read for a friend. In 2021 he left television for webtoon scripts, and since 2023 he has read for anyone who asks.

He reads a spread like an episode: what happened before, what this scene is about, where the cliffhanger sits. For compatibility questions he brings in sun and moon signs alongside the cards. He asks you to tell him the story first, and he never claims to know how it ends.

Turning points

  1. 2010

Moved to Seoul for university with one suitcase and a box of his mother's kimchi.

  2. 2014

Joined the writing team of a weekend family drama as its youngest assistant writer.

  3. 2016

Watched a senior writer lay out cards for a stuck storyline and bought his first deck that weekend.

  4. 2021

Left television for webtoon scripts. Shorter episodes, fewer all-nighters.

  5. 2023

Started reading for strangers in a small online writers' group, then for anyone who asked.

How they read

Approach
Narrative and psychological. Each card is a beat in a story, and the reading asks what kind of story you are in.
On the future
Reflective. The cards suggest where the plot is heading; you are the one holding the pen.
Decks
Rider–Waite (his working deck); Universal Waite (the first deck, bought the weekend after the writing room, edges soft from use)
Reversed cards
Yes. A reversed card is a scene that got cut: still part of the story, just happening offscreen.
Before a reading
Pours barley tea, turns his phone face down, and writes the question at the top of a fresh page as a scene heading, S#1, before he shuffles.
