Be clear with yourself about what is being exchanged, because the difficulty with gifts is never the giving, it is the unspoken ledger afterwards. Accept plainly or decline plainly, and say which. Say which one it is out loud, and the ledger never has to be opened. A gift declined cleanly costs less than one accepted with reservations.
