The Personal Year

Also called: Personal Year number

The main timing calculation in numerology and the one most people meet first. A nine-year cycle in which each year carries a different task, from the standing start of a 1 to the clearing-out of a 9.

How to calculate your Personal Year

  1. Reduce your birth month to a single digit.
  2. Reduce your birth day to a single digit.
  3. Reduce the calendar year you want to read, not your birth year.
  4. Add the three together and reduce to a single digit.
  5. Most practitioners reduce master numbers here rather than keeping them, since the position describes a task rather than a capacity.

Worked example

Maya June Ellerton, born 19 March, reading the year 2026

Birth month March is the 3rd month 3
Birth day 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1 + 0 1
Calendar year 2026 → 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10 → 1 + 0 1
Total 3 + 1 + 1 5

Personal Year 5 for 2026: a year of disruption and range

Note that the birth year is not used. That is the difference between this and the Life Path, which uses all three components of the birth date. Here the birth year is swapped out for the calendar year you are reading, which is what makes the number move.

The nine-year cycle

The same sequence every time, and the fastest way to understand it is to notice that it is the numbers 1 to 9 doing what they always do, applied to time instead of to a person.

Years 1 to 3

Opening

1 begin · 2 gather · 3 express

The building half. Something is started in the 1, finds its people and its patience in the 2, and becomes visible in the 3.

Years 4 to 6

Consolidating

4 work · 5 disrupt · 6 take responsibility

The middle, and the hardest stretch. The 4 does the unglamorous labour, the 5 shakes it and tests what holds, and the 6 asks who else is now depending on it.

Years 7 to 9

Closing

7 examine · 8 harvest · 9 clear out

The returning half. The 7 withdraws to work out what this was for, the 8 collects what is owed, and the 9 ends things to make room for the next 1.

The cycle is continuous, so a 9 year is always followed by a 1. Anything you are unwilling to let go of during a 9 tends to be what makes the following 1 difficult.

What it describes

The Personal Year describes the task of a year rather than its events. It is not a forecast, and reading it as one is where most of the disappointment with numerology comes from.

What it claims is narrower and more useful: that a given year has a grain to it, and that working with that grain is easier than working across it. A 4 year is a poor year to leap and an excellent year to build what you leapt into during the 1. A 9 year is a bad year to start something and a good year to finish four things.

The claim is testable in a way most of the system is not, because you can look back. Most people, given the sequence and their own last nine years, can locate at least one of the turning points without prompting.

Where it comes from

The birth month and day, which stay fixed, plus the calendar year, which moves. Swapping the birth year out for the current one is the whole mechanism: everything else about the calculation is the Life Path.

That construction makes the cycle personal without making it unique. Everyone runs a nine-year cycle, and everyone runs it on their own offset, which is why two people can be in the same calendar year and in quite different personal ones.

It also explains the shared rhythm within a birthday. Two people born on the same day of the same month are always in the same Personal Year as each other, regardless of what year they were born, which is one of the few checkable predictions the system makes.

How to read it

Read the year against the chapter it sits in. A 5 year inside a 4 Pinnacle is an interruption to something being built, and the same 5 year inside a 5 Pinnacle is a release. The Personal Year on its own is a generic statement, and the specificity comes from the long cycle underneath it.

Then read it against the static chart. A 7 year is a withdrawal for everyone, but for a Life Path 7 it is a homecoming and for a Life Path 3 it can be a genuinely difficult twelve months of being asked to do the one thing they are least built for.

The practical use is pacing rather than prediction. Knowing you are in a 4 year does not tell you what will happen; it tells you that this is the year the unglamorous work pays and the leap does not, which is actionable in a way a forecast never is.

Common misreadings

The first error is treating the number as a prophecy. A 5 year does not mean you will move house. It means change is the year's grain, and a person who initiates nothing in a 5 year usually finds change arriving anyway, which is the closest the doctrine comes to a prediction.

The second is the start date. If you calculate from 1 January and your practitioner calculates from your birthday, you will disagree for several months of every year and both be following a legitimate convention.

The third is using the birth year by mistake. That gives you the Life Path, and people do it more often than you would expect.

The fourth is reading a good year and a bad year. There are no bad Personal Years, only years spent working across the grain. The 9 has the worst reputation and is the most useful year in the cycle to anyone willing to finish things.

How it interacts with the rest of the chart

The Personal Year is the parent of the two shorter cycles. The Personal Month is the year plus the calendar month, and the Personal Day is the month plus the calendar date, so both inherit whatever this number is.

Against the Pinnacles it supplies the year-level detail of a chapter that lasts nine years, and the two often turn over near each other, since both run on nine.

The most informative comparison is with the Life Path. Where the Personal Year matches the Life Path, the year tends to be the easiest of the nine: circumstance and constitution pointing the same way. Where it is the number the person handles worst, it is usually the year they remember.

Across the systems

Pythagorean. The Personal Year is standard in modern Western numerology and is the most widely used timing calculation in the field.

Chaldean. Not part of the system as such. Chaldean practice is name-centred, and its practitioners who use personal years have generally imported them from Western numerology.

Vedic. Ank Jyotish has a personal year calculation, though the far more developed Vedic timing framework is astrological rather than numerological: the vimshottari dasha system divides a life into planetary periods of fixed length and is the real equivalent of everything on this page.

Chinese. Timing runs through the calendar rather than through numerology. The twelve-year animal cycle and the sixty-year sexagenary cycle do the work, and there is no personal reduction of a birth date against a current year.

Age of the doctrine. The nine-year personal cycle is twentieth-century. It appears in the same American numerology literature that produced the master numbers and karmic debts, and like them it has no classical ancestor.

Every Personal Year

One line each for the task the year sets. Follow any of them for the full reading of that number.

Master numbers are conventionally reduced in this position, so an 11 year is read as a 2 year and a 22 as a 4. Practitioners who keep them read the year as the same task at higher intensity.

Questions for reflection

  • Which year of the cycle am I in, and am I working with its grain or across it?
  • What did I refuse to let go of in my last 9 year, and did it make the following year harder?
  • If this year has one task rather than a list, what is it?
