How to calculate your Personal Month
- Calculate your Personal Year for the calendar year in question.
- Take the number of the calendar month you want to read, from 1 for January to 12 for December.
- Add the two together.
- Reduce to a single digit.
- Master numbers are conventionally reduced here, since a month is too short a unit to carry one.
Worked example
Maya June Ellerton, reading March 2026
| Personal Year | For 2026, from birth month 3 and birth day 1 | 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Calendar month | March is the 3rd month | 3 |
| Total | 5 + 3 | 8 |
Personal Month 8 in March 2026
Because the cycle is nine months long and the calendar year is twelve, a Personal Month sequence never repeats neatly within a year. January of a 5 year is a 6 month; the following January, in a 6 year, is a 7 month. The pattern shifts by one each year, which is why it is worth calculating rather than memorising.
How a year actually paces out
The Personal Month runs 1 to 9 and then restarts, but since the calendar year has twelve months, the sequence spills over into the following year and shifts each time.
The opening months
1 to 3start · gather · show
The stretch where a new piece of work has the best chance. Whatever is begun in a 1 month tends to become visible around the 3.
The working months
4 to 6build · disrupt · absorb
The demanding middle. The 4 month is the one to schedule the hard labour into, and the 5 is the one to leave slack in.
The closing months
7 to 9review · collect · finish
The 7 month is for stepping back, the 8 for pressing an advantage, and the 9 for clearing the desk before the next 1.
Read the month's number against the year's. A 1 month inside a 9 year is a small opening in a year otherwise spent finishing, and it is usually the wrong moment to act on it.
What it describes
The Personal Month is the Personal Year at a finer resolution. It answers a scheduling question rather than a life question: given that this year has a task, which four weeks are best for which part of it.
On its own it says very little, and it should not be read alone. A Personal Month 4 is only meaningful once you know whether it sits inside a 1 year, where it is the month the new thing gets its foundations, or inside a 9 year, where it is the month you do the tedious administrative work of closing something down.
The honest claim for this cycle is modest. It is a pacing device, and treated as one it is genuinely useful to anyone who plans a year in advance.
Where it comes from
The Personal Year plus the calendar month, which makes it the first of the nested short cycles. Everything above it feeds down: the birth month and day set the offset, the calendar year sets the Personal Year, and the calendar month sets this.
The nesting has one consequence people find counter-intuitive. Because the cycle is nine long and the calendar year is twelve, the months do not line up year to year. There is no month that is reliably your 1 month, and the sequence advances by one position each January. That is a feature of the arithmetic rather than a flaw, and it is why the calculation has to be redone each year.
The start of the month is the calendar first, not the birthday, in every convention I am aware of.
How to read it
Read it as a pair with the year, always in that order: year first for the task, month second for the timing of it.
The most useful application is planning. If you know the year is a 4, the 4 month inside it is the one to protect for deep work, and the 5 month is the one to leave slack in because something will move. If the year is a 1, the 1 month is the moment to actually launch rather than the moment to decide to.
The second use is retrospective, and it is the better test. Look back at a year you remember well and locate its 5 month. Most people find something.
Do not read a month against the static chart in any detail. Four weeks is too short a unit to say much about a Life Path.
Common misreadings
The biggest error is reading the month without the year, which produces generic statements that fit any four weeks.
The second is expecting the same month each year to carry the same number. It does not, because nine and twelve do not divide, and people who memorise one year's sequence and reuse it will be wrong from the following January.
The third is inflation. A Personal Month is a scheduling hint, and there is no basis in the doctrine for making a serious decision on it. If the month and the year disagree, the year wins.
The fourth is arithmetic drift. Because this number depends on the Personal Year, an error in the year propagates into every month and every day beneath it. If a month reading feels consistently wrong, recheck the year before questioning the system.
How it interacts with the rest of the chart
The Personal Month sits between the year above it and the day below it, and it is the only cycle whose entire content is inherited.
Upward, it qualifies the Personal Year and nothing else. It has no relationship to the Pinnacles or the Period Cycles worth reading, because those turn over on a scale where a month is noise.
Downward, it is the direct input to the Personal Day, which is the Personal Month plus the calendar date. That makes the month the pivot of the whole short-cycle system: an error here changes every day of the month, and a correct month makes the daily reading worth running.
Against the static positions, treat it as too fine-grained to be informative. The place where the short cycles meet the fixed chart is the Personal Year, not this.
Across the systems
Pythagorean. Standard in modern Western numerology, always presented as an adjunct to the Personal Year rather than as a calculation of its own.
Chaldean. Not part of the system. Practitioners who use it have taken it from Western numerology.
Vedic. No numerological equivalent. Vedic timing at this resolution is astrological: the antardasha and pratyantardasha subdivisions of a planetary period do the same job with a much more elaborate apparatus behind them.
Chinese. Months carry meaning through the calendar rather than through personal reduction, with each lunar month having its own character and its own associations. The seventh, the Ghost Month, is the strongest example, and it applies to everyone rather than being personal.
Age of the doctrine. Twentieth-century, and derived from the Personal Year rather than arrived at independently.
Every Personal Month
One line each for what the four weeks are for. Follow any of them for the full reading of that number.
- Personal Month 1 Start. The month to launch rather than to plan, and the one where acting early beats acting well.
- Personal Month 2 Gather. Conversations, permissions and allies. Little visible progress, and pushing does not help.
- Personal Month 3 Show. Whatever began in the 1 becomes visible. Social, scattered, and easy to enjoy without advancing.
- Personal Month 4 Build. The month to protect for deep work, and the one that decides whether the year's project holds.
- Personal Month 5 Disruption. Leave slack in the schedule, because something moves whether or not you moved it.
- Personal Month 6 Obligation. Home, family and other people's needs take the front, usually without asking first.
- Personal Month 7 Step back. A poor month to push and a good one to check whether the year is going where you thought.
- Personal Month 8 Press the advantage. Money, negotiations and decisions with consequences land better here than elsewhere.
- Personal Month 9 Finish. Clear the desk. Anything carried past this month tends to make the next 1 harder.
The month is always read against the year. A 1 month inside a 9 year is a small opening in a year otherwise spent closing things, and acting on it usually goes badly.
Questions for reflection
- Which month of this year did I schedule the hardest work into, and what number was it?
- Am I trying to launch something in a month the year is not supporting?
- Looking back at a year I remember, where was its 5 month?
