Four of Pentacles

Tarot: Sunday, October 4

A card drawn from one of three decks

Four of Pentacles

Reversed Rider–Waite–Smith Tarot
Four of Pentacles

The figure in the Four of Pentacles sits on a stone seat with one coin under each foot, one on his head and one clutched to his chest, the walled city behind him. Reversed, the coins are loose and the clutching has become the problem. The card is the fear of losing what you have, taken past caution into the thing that actually costs you: what is held so tightly it cannot be used. Notice what you are gripping today. One coin is worth more moving than under your foot. Spend it, share it, or put it somewhere it grows. The walled city was built by people who spent.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You do not hoard, and today the card is about what you clutch anyway: a position, a plan, a right. Loosen one. What is gripped cannot be used, and you want to use everything.

Taurus

This is your card reversed and it is aimed at you. Today one coin off the foot and into use. The security you keep by clutching is the opportunity you lose by it.

Gemini

You clutch options rather than coins. Today spend one. An option held forever is a coin under the foot, and the reversal says it is costing you.

Cancer

You hold what you have against the fear of losing it. Today the fear is the loss. Put one thing in motion, and notice the walled city does not fall.

Leo

You clutch the coin on your head, the one everyone sees. Today move it. The reputation held too tightly is the one that cannot grow.

Virgo

You save resources so carefully you never deploy them. Today deploy one. The reversal is the miser's precision, and the precision has become the waste.

Libra

You will weigh whether to spend the coin until it is worth less. Today spend it. The clutching is the indecision, and the reversal names it as the loss.

Scorpio

You hold everything and share nothing. Today share one thing. The reversed Four is the grip that has become the cost, and yours is tight.

Sagittarius

You do not clutch coins; you clutch freedom. Today spend some of it on a commitment. What is held only for its own sake is the reversal.

Capricorn

You hoard as strategy and the strategy has passed its use. Today put a coin to work. The walled city was built by spending, and you are sitting outside it.

Aquarius

You clutch ideas. Today give one away. The reversed Four is resources held so tightly they cannot be used, and yours are the unused kind.

Pisces

You do not clutch and you do not manage either, which is the reversal's other face. Today put one coin somewhere it grows, deliberately. Neglect is a grip too.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

This is your reversal: the hoard that has stopped being safety. Today spend one coin on something that grows. The clutching costs more than the coin.

Ox

You hold what you built and will not risk it. Today risk one coin. The walled city was built by people who spent, and you built it.

Tiger

You do not hoard; you seize. Today the card is what you seize and will not release. Let one thing go, and the hands are free for the next.

Rabbit

You clutch out of fear of the loss. Today the fear is the loss. One coin into motion and the city stands; it was never the coin holding it.

Dragon

You clutch the coin on your head. Today move it. Status held too tightly is the one resource that dies from being kept.

Snake

You hoard quietly and completely. Today share one thing, visibly. The reversed Four is the grip nobody can see and everybody feels.

Horse

You do not hoard coins and you hoard escape routes. Today close one. The thing held only in case is the coin under the foot.

Goat

You hold what others gave you against the day they take it back. Today spend some. What was given is used, not guarded.

Monkey

You clutch every possibility. Today spend one on an actual thing. Possibility held forever is the miser's coin in a cleverer pocket.

Rooster

You save exactly and spend never. Today the exactness is the fault. Put one coin to use and let the ledger be slightly wrong.

Dog

You hoard for those you protect and they cannot use it either. Today give one coin to them, outright. Protection that cannot be spent is the reversal.

Pig

You do not clutch coins; you clutch comfort. Today spend some of it on something uncomfortable and growing. The city behind you was not built in a chair.
