One of the sixty-four hexagrams

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

The Wanderer

Hexagram 56 is fire moving across a mountainside, burning where it stands and then going on. It is the stranger's hexagram, and its Judgment fixes the scale at once: success through smallness. Today you may be somewhere without standing, a new room, a new group, someone else's ground. Ambitious moves are simply not on offer there. What is on offer is reputation. The first line warns that fussing over trivia costs a stranger more than it costs anyone at home. The fifth shows how a place is earned: one pheasant, brought down with one arrow, in front of witnesses.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

Arriving somewhere new, you will want to take charge at once. A stranger has no standing to take charge with. The Judgment fixes the scale: success through smallness. Do one small thing well first.

Taurus

Being away from your own ground unsettles you, and you will want the new place to feel owned. The second line is enough: an inn, your belongings with you, one reliable person. Settle for that much shelter.

Gemini

Making friends among strangers is easy for you, and it serves you here. Keep the talk light and the opinions few. The first line warns that a newcomer who fusses over trivia pays more for it than anyone at home.

Cancer

Being without a home base is hard for you. The fourth line finds shelter, property and an axe and still says my heart is not glad. The hexagram allows that feeling. It does not ask you to pretend the inn is home.

Leo

In a new place you want to be recognised quickly. The fifth line shows how it happens: one pheasant, one arrow, in public. Praise and office follow a single act done well, not a claim to the standing you had elsewhere.

Virgo

Unfamiliar surroundings make you notice every flaw. The first line is blunt about that habit: fussing over trivia brings misfortune on the wanderer. Let the small things go while you are not on your own ground.

Libra

Adapting gracefully to the customs of a new place is what this hexagram asks, and you do it well. Courtesy is the stranger's whole standing. The third line shows the inn burning when that courtesy slips.

Scorpio

As an outsider you watch closely and say little, which is sound. The Image adds one rule: let no dispute drag on. Fire on a mountain does not linger, and a grievance carried through a strange place costs more than it is worth.

Sagittarius

Travel is your natural condition, and the Wanderer is the hexagram of travel. Your risk is the top line: laughing at first, then weeping, the cow lost through carelessness. Keep track of what sustains you on the road.

Capricorn

Without your usual position you feel exposed. The Judgment says success through smallness, so do not try to rebuild your standing in a day. Earn it the way the fifth line does, with one accurate act.

Aquarius

Being the outsider rarely bothers you, and here that is an asset. Use it lightly. The hexagram expects a stranger to keep ambitions small and conduct careful, since conduct is the only standing on offer.

Pisces

You drift into new places and lose track of your belongings, literal and otherwise. The second line has the wanderer with their belongings and one loyal companion. Keep hold of both.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

A new place gets sized up quickly by you, with an eye for the advantage. The hexagram allows small success only. Take the small gain and leave the larger scheme for ground where you have standing.

Ox

Unfamiliar ground slows you down, and that is no fault here. The wanderer who goes carefully keeps the inn. Do your work steadily and let reliability become your reputation in the new place.

Tiger

A stranger who charges in gets the third line: the inn burns, the young servant's loyalty is lost. Hold back. The commentaries on this hexagram put that loss down to the wanderer's own manner.

Rabbit

Moving among strangers suits your gentle manner, and modesty is what the Judgment rewards. Keep to it. Small success is exactly what this hexagram offers, and you are well placed to collect it.

Dragon

Anywhere you arrive, you expect to be recognised. The Wanderer offers no recognition in advance. Bring down the one pheasant cleanly, in public, and the fifth line says praise and office come after.

Snake

Discretion serves a stranger well. Watch, learn the customs, and choose your moment. When it comes, the fifth line asks for a single arrow rather than several, so wait until you are sure of the shot.

Horse

Being on the move is when you are happiest, and the Wanderer agrees the road is fine. The top line adds a caution: in the excitement of moving on, do not lose the cow, the steady thing that feeds you.

Goat

Away from familiar support you can feel unsure. The second line provides what is enough: shelter, your own things, one person you can trust. Look for that and do not ask for more.

Monkey

Strangers warm to your charm quickly, and it can be mistaken for taking liberties. In this hexagram the stranger's reputation is everything. Use the charm for one well-done thing and keep the tricks for home.

Rooster

Faults in a new place will catch your eye, and you will want to say so. The Image recommends care in judgement and lets no lawsuit linger. Hold the critique, or make it once and drop it.

Dog

Among strangers you look for someone to be loyal to, and the second line rewards that: the trust of a young servant gained. Treat it carefully. The third line is the same loyalty lost through the wanderer's manner.

Pig

Easy trust makes you welcome in unfamiliar places. Keep an eye on your things, though. The top line loses the cow through carelessness, and the hexagram treats inattention as the stranger's real danger.
