One of the sixty-four hexagrams

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

The Receptive

Hexagram 2 is six broken lines, the complement of the first, and the Judgment says the strength it rewards is a mare's, not a stallion's: strength that runs under harness. If the noble person sets out, they first go astray and later find the way. The Image is the earth carrying everything set on it. Today is for capacity rather than initiative. Something is being placed on you, and the work is to be broad enough to hold it. Follow what is right rather than leading what is yours. The going astray comes from taking the front when the day asked for the ground.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

You will lead and go astray, exactly as the Judgment says. Today follow something. The mare's strength is real strength and it does not need to be at the front to be used.

Taurus

Your hexagram, and the earth is your image. Today carry what is placed on you without complaint and without comment. The broad character is not passive; it is what everyone else is standing on.

Gemini

Receptivity is not listening while you plan your reply. Today, receive. Let someone else's direction be the one you follow and see what you learn from not steering.

Cancer

You carry the world already and this is the day the book says so. Make yourself broad enough for it rather than bracing against it. The earth does not brace.

Leo

Following is the one thing the hexagram asks and the one thing you resist. Today, follow the right thing for a whole day and notice that the strength is undiminished.

Virgo

You serve by improving and the Receptive serves by holding. Today hold. Let what is placed on you stay as it was placed, and be the ground it rests on.

Libra

Devotion to the right thing is easier for you than choosing which thing. Choose this morning, then follow it without re-weighing. The mare does not check the harness at every furlong.

Scorpio

You do not follow, you wait until you can lead. Today there is no leading available. Be the earth for one day and find out how much can be carried by someone who is not in charge.

Sagittarius

Setting out first is your instinct and the Judgment is explicit that it goes astray. Today go second. The way is found later by the one who did not insist on the front.

Capricorn

Capacity is your virtue and it is the whole hexagram. Today the addition is receptivity: let something be placed on you that you did not choose, and carry it as though you had.

Aquarius

Following the right thing is not conformity. Today, subordinate the principle to the situation for one day. The earth does not argue with what is set on it.

Pisces

Receptive is your natural state and the hexagram gives it a spine: the mare's steadiness. Today, receive without dissolving. Carry it, do not become it.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You will look for the advantage in following and find none. There is none. Today follow because the thing is right, and let the carrying be its own return.

Ox

Your hexagram, in every particular. Carry the load, follow the right direction, do not go to the front. The only addition is to know what you are carrying and for whom.

Tiger

Six yin lines is the least natural day in your year. Take it as an exercise. Follow one thing to the letter today and find out whether your strength survives the harness. It does.

Rabbit

Receptive devotion is your habit and today it is an instruction. Carry what is placed on you with your full breadth rather than shrinking under it. The earth is wide.

Dragon

You will set out to lead and go astray, as the text says. Today let someone else set the direction. The mare's strength is not less than the stallion's; it is better aimed.

Snake

You follow when it suits you and lead when it does not. Today follow throughout. What is set on you is right, and the way is found by whoever carried it.

Horse

The harness is the whole hexagram and you hate the harness. Wear it for one day. The mare runs further under it than the wild horse does without.

Goat

Following is easy for you and the hexagram adds the mare's steadiness: follow the right thing, not the nearest. Choose what you carry today with some care.

Monkey

You will find the harness interesting for an hour and slip it. Keep it on. Today the Receptive rewards a whole day of steadiness, which is the part you skip.

Rooster

You will correct the load before you carry it. Carry it as placed. Today the earth does not rearrange what is set on it, and neither should you.

Dog

This is your day and your virtue: carry what is given, follow what is right, do not push for the front. The one caution is to know when the load is too much and say so.

Pig

You carry generously and today the hexagram asks for breadth of character as the capacity. Make yourself large enough for what is set on you, and do not put it down early.
