One of the sixty-four hexagrams

This is an archived reading, kept as it was published.

The Creative

Hexagram 1 is six unbroken lines, the only one in the book made entirely of yang. The Judgment is four words and two thousand years of argument: the source, it gets through, it rewards holding to the course. The Image is the most quoted in the classic. Heaven moves without ceasing, so the noble person makes themselves strong and does not stop. Today has that quality. The energy is originating rather than responding, and the instruction is self-generated effort with nothing external to push against. Start the thing. Then, which is the harder half, keep going past the point where starting was the fun.

For your star sign

The same reading, taken through each sign of the zodiac.

Aries

This is your hexagram and the warning at the top line is for you: the arrogant dragon has cause for regret. Today, originate freely and stop one step before the point where you would overreach.

Taurus

Six yang lines is more motion than you order in a year. Take it in small doses. Start one thing today that has been waiting for energy, and let heaven's ceaselessness be the pace for the week, not the hour.

Gemini

The Creative originates and you originate constantly. What it adds is the third word: it rewards holding the course. Today, keep going with one beginning past the point of interest.

Cancer

Pure yang is an uncomfortable climate for you and it is the day's climate. Do not wait for it to soften. Make one strong move outward this morning and let the shell close again by evening.

Leo

The dragon rising is your image and today it rises. The hexagram's caution is about the top: the dragon that flies too high. Take the day's momentum and leave the last ten per cent unspent.

Virgo

You will want the six lines checked before you move on them. They are unbroken. Today the instruction is effort, self-started and unceasing, and the checking can happen while you walk.

Libra

There is no balance in this hexagram, only force in one direction. Today, allow that. One decisive push, without the counterweight, is what the day is built for.

Scorpio

You originate quietly and this hexagram originates in the open. Try it once today. Start the thing where people can see it start and notice that the visibility costs nothing.

Sagittarius

Heaven moves without ceasing, and so do you, in seven directions. Today it is one direction. The Creative is originating force with a course held, and the course is the whole difficulty.

Capricorn

You are the noble person who does not stop and you know it. The hexagram adds the origin. Today start something new rather than continuing something long, and give it the same persistence.

Aquarius

You will theorise the six lines. They are asking to be used. Today the creative impulse is a thing to act on, and the understanding of it can follow the action.

Pisces

Six lines of yang and no water anywhere. Today is not your element and it is still your day. Make one thing begin that is entirely yours, and let heaven's motion carry it.

For your Chinese animal

The same reading, taken through each animal of the Chinese zodiac.

Rat

You originate fast and abandon faster. The hexagram's third word is the one that matters: it rewards holding the course. Today, keep the thing you start.

Ox

You do not stop, which is the Image exactly. What you rarely do is originate. Today start something rather than carry something, and bring the same persistence to it.

Tiger

Six yang lines is your native weather and the top line is your warning. The dragon that flies too high regrets it. Take the day at strength and stop short of the summit.

Rabbit

Pure force is not your medium. Today borrow it. One originating move, made without asking anyone, and the rest of the day can be as careful as you like.

Dragon

The hexagram is literally six dragons rising and this is your day of the year. Use it and mind the top line. Even for you, the arrogant dragon has cause for regret.

Snake

You originate in private and the Creative is public. Make one beginning visible today. The energy does not diminish for being seen, and you will want the witnesses later.

Horse

Heaven moves without ceasing and so do you. The hexagram asks for one thing you lack: a course. Pick the direction this morning and run it all day.

Goat

You will wait for someone to originate and then help. Today originate. The Creative rewards self-generated effort, and yours has been waiting for permission it does not need.

Monkey

You start six things by noon. The hexagram is one origin held to a course. Pick the beginning that still interests you at four o'clock and stay with it.

Rooster

You will inspect the six lines for a broken one. There is none. Today the energy is whole, and the correct response is to use it rather than to verify it.

Dog

You persist for other people and the Creative asks you to persist for yourself. Today begin the thing you have been putting off in favour of everyone else's beginnings.

Pig

Effort without ceasing is not your preferred rhythm. Give it one day. Start something this morning and keep it going through the afternoon you would usually take off.
