Pluto

The transformer

Pluto is the last, smallest and slowest of astrology's planets, and its heaviest symbol: power, death and rebirth, the buried that returns, the transformation that proceeds by destruction. In the chart he marks where power concentrates, where crisis excavates, and where a person is compelled, haunted and, worked rightly, regenerated. His gifts are depth, survival intelligence, the capacity for total renewal; his shadows are the same forces unowned: compulsion, domination, the abyss looked at too long. He is never a casual placement. Charts do not have a little Pluto anywhere; they have him buried, and the reading is the excavation.

Found at the edge, named by a child

Pluto's discovery is a story of patience at the margin. Percival Lowell's observatory in Flagstaff had hunted a trans-Neptunian 'Planet X' since the 1900s; Lowell died without it; and in 1930 Clyde Tombaugh, a twenty-four-year-old Kansas farm boy hired to compare photographic plates, caught the faint speck moving between exposures on the 18th of February. The name came by way of a breakfast table in Oxford: eleven-year-old Venetia Burney suggested the underworld god, her grandfather cabled the astronomers, and the observatory adopted it, sealed by the monogram, PL, Percival Lowell's initials, hidden in the glyph. The darkest planet, named by a schoolchild and a pun: Pluto's fondness for the overlooked was in the file from day one.

The atomic era writes the brief

As with Uranus and Neptune, the era supplied the meanings. Pluto arrived in 1930: physics was splitting the nucleus, and the element named plutonium would fuel the bomb within fifteen years; depth psychology had mapped the unconscious, the buried mind that runs the visible one; mass politics was industrialising power in totalitarian forms; and organised crime had become a shadow economy with its own films. Hidden forces, colossal energies released by splitting, undergrounds of every kind gone systemic: astrology read the portfolio straight into the planet, and the readings have held with uncomfortable precision, down to Pluto's transit schedule through the twentieth century's crises.

Plouton: the wealth in the dark

The myth was ready before the planet. Greece's underworld lord was so feared his name was avoided: instead of Hades men said Plouton, 'the wealthy one', for the ores, gems and seed-grain that wait underground, the terror and the treasure at one address, which is the planet's meaning in five words. The mythology's economy is Pluto's whole curriculum: what descends is not destroyed but transformed, Persephone eats the pomegranate and thereafter divides the year, death feeds the harvest, the underworld is the bank of the visible world. Astrology adopted the god's double ledger entire: Pluto's placements are where the chart's wealth is buried, and the digging is not optional, only the timing.

Scorpio, the orbit, and the generations

Modern astrology assigned Pluto co-rulership of Scorpio beside Mars, and the fit was immediate: the fixed-water sign of depth, crisis and regeneration, whose page describes the scorpion-serpent-eagle ladder, received the underworld's own planet, Mars the blade, Pluto the gravity. Like his fellow moderns he holds no classical dignities and reads as a potent outsider. His orbit adds a signature irregularity: tilted, stretched, crossing inside Neptune's for decades, it holds him in a sign anywhere from twelve years, his Scorpio passage, to thirty-one, his Taurus one, so his generational stamps vary wildly in length. Pluto's sign marks a cohort's relation to power and taboo, the Leo generation's charismatic selfhood, Virgo's systems and purities, Scorpio's intensity-literacy, while house and aspect place the volcano in the individual chart.

Pluto in the chart

Pluto's house is where the chart does its deep business: the tenth's ruthless vocations and reckonings with authority, the seventh's transforming and power-tangled partnerships, the fourth's buried family history, the eighth, his natural field, at home among inheritances, debts and the shared depths. His aspects intensify what they touch: Sun-Pluto's formidable, tested will; Moon-Pluto's emotional X-ray vision and its vigilance; Mercury-Pluto's investigative mind; Venus-Pluto's all-or-nothing heart; Mars-Pluto's force held under pressure. The angles most of all: a Pluto rising or culminating marks lives organised around power, crisis and regeneration, whether chosen or delivered. In every placement the same rule holds: Pluto unowned operates as compulsion; Pluto worked operates as depth.

Transits: the excavation schedule

Pluto's transits are the slowest in astrology, arriving once per natal placement per lifetime and staying for years, and they work like geology: pressure accumulates invisibly, the settled surface fails, and new ground rises that could not have been predicted from the old map. The contacted planet's domain, career under Pluto-MC, marriage under Pluto-Venus, is demolished to its load-bearing truths and rebuilt from them. The tradition's counsel is archaeological rather than martial: dig with the process, salvage what proves real, resist nothing that is already gone, and expect the site, in the end, to be unrecognisable and better. People date their lives by these transits, usually in retrospect, which is Pluto's tempo: the meaning surfaces after the event, like everything else he governs.

2006, the demotion, and the last word

In 2006 the International Astronomical Union reclassified Pluto as a dwarf planet, and the question reached astrology within the hour: is Pluto still a planet in charts? The answer was, and remains, a shrug. Astrology's 'planet' has meant a moving significant light since Babylon, the Sun and Moon included; no chart ever weighed influence by diameter, and the practice that kept the Moon senior to Jupiter was not going to retire the underworld over a definitional vote. Practitioners noted, with the dark satisfaction the planet teaches, that the episode was itself perfectly Plutonian: demotion, exile to the margins, and a return with the file intact, for the reclassified planet has lost no gravity in the consulting room. What is buried, the whole tradition agrees, does not thereby stop working.
