The house of the summit

The tenth house crowns the chart: the angular house at the wheel's top, anchored at the Midheaven, the sky's culminating point, governing career and calling, reputation and honours, authority and the public record. Its principle is visibility, what stands at noon is seen, and its questions are the world's: what do you do, what are you called, what does your name mean where you are not present. The tradition read action itself here, praxis, the accumulated public deed, and the modern career reading inherits that depth: the tenth is not the job title but the visible work of a life, the record the world keeps and holds one to.

The Midheaven: noon as a principle

The Medium Coeli, 'middle of the sky', is where the ecliptic crosses the upper meridian: the culminating point that every planet passes at its daily height, the chart's noon. Its anchor makes the tenth the most public place on the wheel, and the doctrine follows mechanically: planets here act on a stage, matters here are conducted in view, and the house's afflictions, uniquely, are broadcast. The tradition's candour on this point is bracing, the house of honours is the house of scandals, eminence and disgrace read at one address, because the noon light magnifies without moral preference. Charts of the celebrated and the notorious both lean on strong tenths; the difference is the condition of what stands there.

Career, calling and the sixth-house distinction

The working tradition keeps two houses for what moderns lump as 'work': the tenth holds the position, career, rank, the professional name, and the sixth holds the toil, the daily tasks and conditions that fund the position. The distinction reads lives accurately, the shining title over the grinding desk is two houses telling one story, and career counselling by chart uses both: the MC's sign for the calling's style, its ruler's station for where the career is actually decided, the tenth's residents for the public role, and the sixth for the daily reality the role will rest on. The tenth also holds a parent, the world-facing one, opposite the fourth's parent-as-root: the one who modelled achievement and expectation, whichever parent held the office, the two houses splitting the parental inheritance between origin and aspiration.

Reading the tenth: cusp, ruler, residents

The sign at the Midheaven styles the calling: Aries leads and pioneers, Taurus builds and endows, Gemini communicates for a living, Virgo perfects a craft, Scorpio manages power and crisis, Pisces serves the image or the ideal. The ruler carries the career to its station: an MC ruler in the ninth makes profession of learning or the foreign, in the fourth roots it at home, in the twelfth serves institutions or works unseen. Residents perform at noon: the Sun seeks eminence and finds stages; Saturn climbs slowly to real authority, the executive's classic signature, honours late but solid; Jupiter is promoted, honoured and trusted; Mars competes and commands publicly; Venus charms professionally, the artist's or diplomat's mark; the Moon's public life tides, the politician's or performer's Moon; Uranus reinvents the career serially; Neptune glamorises or dissolves it; Pluto wields power and is tested by it, publicly.

Karma bhava: action at the top

Jyotisha's tenth is the karma bhava, the house of action and profession, by common doctrine the strongest of the four kendras: the summit where deeds are done and seen. Planets here enjoy directional strength, dig bala, at the top of the chart, the Sun and Mars classically excellent, and the career is timed by the tenth lord's periods and judged with the karakas, Sun for authority, Saturn for labour and order, Mercury for trade, Jupiter for counsel. The Vedic name settles an old ambiguity nicely: karma here means action, the house of what one does, and the doctrine that one's public standing is accumulated deed rather than granted title is both traditions' final word on the matter.

The axis with the fourth

The tenth faces the fourth across the meridian: crown and root, the public record and the private ground, achievement and belonging. The axis is the chart's vertical beam and its rule is arboreal in both directions: the tree rises no higher than the roots hold, careers against an unsettled fourth grow brittle at height, and the roots are fed by the crown's light, homes starved of any achievement grow airless. Every biography works this beam, the noon self and the midnight self negotiating one life, and the astrologer's reading of either house is provisional until the other has been consulted: where the summit stands, and what it stands on.
