The house of toil and repair

The sixth house governs the running costs of embodied life: illness, injury and recovery; labour and its conditions; service given and commanded; the working animals of the old economy and the routines and regimens of every economy. Its topics look miscellaneous until their root is seen, the sixth is the house of friction, everything that wears the body and everything that maintains it, the wound and the clinic in one precinct. The ancients named it Bad Fortune and meant it; the working tradition discovered what the name conceals: the difficult house is the useful one, and most of a life's actual quality is decided in it.

Bad Fortune and the doctrine of aversion

The Hellenistic name is blunt, Bad Fortune, the body's hard luck, as the twelfth's Bad Spirit is the soul's, and its technical ground is the doctrine of aversion: standing six signs from the Ascendant, the sixth cannot 'see' the first by any classical aspect. Its matters therefore ambush the self: illness arrives unannounced, strain accumulates unnoticed, the grind wears in the blind spot. The insight outlives the pessimism. Sixth-house matters are precisely those that escape attention until they present a bill, which is why the house's modern remedy, routine, regimen, scheduled maintenance, amounts to installing mirrors in the blind spot: attention paid on purpose where it does not flow by nature.

Mars's joy: the knife that heals

The scheme of joys seats Mars in the sixth, and the choice is the tradition at its most surgical. The planet of cutting rejoices where cutting heals: the surgeon's knife, the trainer's drill, the soldier's discipline, Mars's harshness given work that needs harshness. The joy softens the malefic here into the house's craftsman, and colours the house itself: sixth-house matters respond to Martial virtues, effort, regimen, the decisive intervention, more than to any other planet's, and the house's people, healers, trainers, soldiers of the daily grind, tend to the Martial whatever their charts.

Illness, work and service: the three registers

The house reads in three registers the tradition keeps distinct. Medically, it holds acquired illness, what goes wrong through use, strain and infection, as against the constitution shown by the first house, and equally the mending: medicine, nursing, regimen, the whole craft of repair. Occupationally, it holds work as toil, the tasks, conditions and colleagues of the working day, as against the tenth's career, the public position and its honours: many a shining tenth is funded by a grinding sixth, and charts show both stories separately. Relationally, it holds service: what one does for others as duty or employment, and the help one commands or depends on, with the house's condition showing the arrangement's dignity, service as craft and calling, or as subjection.

Reading the sixth: cusp, ruler, residents

The sign on the cusp styles the workshop: Virgo methodises it, natural affinity, Leo dramatises the workplace, Pisces dissolves boundaries between service and sacrifice. The ruler carries the story, a sixth ruler in the second earns by service, in the tenth makes career of the craft, in the twelfth converts strain into retreat or hospital. Residents work in place: Mars in his joy operates, drills and repairs; Saturn makes work heavy and complaints chronic, or discipline complete; Jupiter blesses the workplace and heals generously; Venus makes colleagues dear and the craft beautiful; Mercury is the clerk-craftsman at his natural bench; the Moon ties health to habit and mood; the moderns bring their signatures, Uranian job-changes, Neptunian mystery ailments, Plutonian regeneration through crisis.

Roga bhava: adversity as fuel

Jyotisha's sixth, roga or ari bhava, holds disease, enemies and debts, the classic triad of adversity, and classifies the house doubly: a dusthana, one of the difficult houses, and an upachaya, a growing house that improves with time and effort. The double classification is a doctrine of usable adversity: the enemy fought becomes strength, the illness managed becomes discipline, the debt worked becomes capacity, and malefics placed here burn the house's troubles as fuel, Mars and Saturn in the Vedic sixth are famously fighters who win. The Western tradition's Mars-joy and the Vedic upachaya are one insight in two dialects: this house rewards engagement and punishes neglect, more sharply than any other.

The axis with the twelfth

The sixth faces the twelfth: Bad Fortune against Bad Spirit, the body's troubles against the soul's, the clinic against the cloister. The axis holds the chart's hard service, and its division of labour is exact: the sixth repairs what work can reach, regimen, treatment, effort, discipline; the twelfth holds what work cannot, the grief, the addiction, the institutional stay, the matters that yield only to surrender and grace, as its own page describes. Mistaking the ends of this axis is a signature human error the chart warns against: working what should be surrendered, surrendering what should be worked. Reading the pair together tells which is which, for this life, in this season, which may be the most practically useful judgement astrology offers.
