Neptune

The dissolver

Neptune is astrology's solvent: the principle that thins and dissolves boundaries, between self and other, real and imagined, waking and dream, sacred and merely wished. In the chart he marks where longing concentrates, where inspiration and compassion flood, and where confusion, glamour and self-deception pool in the same low ground. His gifts are imagination, empathy, artistry and the mystic's unity; his shadows are the identical waters at different depths: escapism, addiction, deceit and the beautiful excuse. No planet requires more honesty to read well, because none rewards dishonesty so smoothly.

Found with a pen

Neptune's discovery is the most elegant in the history of astronomy, and the most Neptunian. Uranus would not keep to his computed path; something unseen was pulling him. Urbain Le Verrier in Paris calculated the invisible disturber's position from the perturbations alone, posted the coordinates to Berlin, and on the night of 23 September 1846 Johann Galle found the new world within a degree of the prediction, seen for the first time only after being known. John Couch Adams had computed much the same in England, and the priority quarrel that followed was suitably murky. A planet discovered by inference, invisible to every unaided eye in history: the lord of the unseen arrived unseen, and astrology noticed the omen in the method.

The age of ether

The era supplied the meanings, as it had for Uranus. Neptune arrived in 1846 amid ether and chloroform's first painless surgeries, consciousness dissolved on schedule; photography fixing ghostly images of the absent; the séance craze spreading from Hydesville two years later; laudanum in every cabinet; utopian communes dreaming perfected societies, with the Communist Manifesto printed in 1848; and the Romantic arts at full flood. Dissolved pain, captured light, contacted spirits, chemical paradises, dreamed worlds: the portfolio assembled itself, and astrology filed it under the sea-god's name, for once a perfect fit, the planet of the boundless named for the element without edges.

Pisces and the two rulers

Modern astrology assigned Neptune co-rulership of Pisces beside Jupiter's traditional seat, the sea given to the sea, and the pairing reads as the sign lives, as the Pisces page develops: Jupiter's Pisces blesses, believes and gives without accounting; Neptune's dissolves, dreams and longs. Traditional practice keeps both rulers in view, and the doctrine of octaves adds a third light: Neptune as the higher octave of Venus, personal love universalised into compassion, devotion and the beautiful, at the price of the personal. He holds no seat in the classical dignities, arriving eighteen centuries too late; like his fellow moderns he is read as a powerful outsider, and his fourteen-year stays in each sign make his sign placement generational, the dream and intoxicant of an era, while house and aspect personalise the fog.

Neptune in the chart

Neptune's house is where the longing lives: the arena a person mythologises, idealises and cannot quite see plainly, the tenth's dream career, the seventh's ideal beloved and its disappointments, the fourth's lost Eden of home. His aspects sensitise the planets they touch: Moon-Neptune feels every room's weather as its own; Mercury-Neptune thinks in images, poetry's signature, and must learn to translate; Venus-Neptune loves the dream through the person, art's aspect and heartbreak's; Mars-Neptune acts by inspiration or evaporates; Sun-Neptune identifies with the ideal and must find edges the hard way. In every case the reading is the same question at different addresses: where does this chart dissolve, and is the dissolution feeding art, love and spirit, or merely leaking.

Glamour, art and the industries of dream

Glamour, in its old sense, is a cast enchantment, and it is Neptune's signature product: the image lovelier than the fact, the celebrity, the brand, the filtered life. He governs the arts of immersion, music first of all, the art that bypasses the reasoning mind entirely, and cinema, the shared dream in the dark, an industry born and matured under his long stays. Strong Neptune marks musicians, filmmakers, poets, mystics, healers and image-makers of every kind, and equally their audiences: the planet works both sides of the veil, the caster of the spell and the willingly spellbound. Modern commerce, which sells images of lives attached to objects, is arguably his largest temple, a point the tradition makes without cynicism: enchantment is a human need, and Neptune's question is only ever what the enchantment serves.

Transits: years of mist

Neptune's transits move at fog's pace, years over a single natal point, and work like weather rather than events: certainties soften, ideals bloom, the contacted planet's affairs grow mysteriously tidal, and clarity returns only afterward, when what was real has stayed and what was mist has burned off. The tradition's counsel for the duration is the sailor's: reduce speed, trust instruments, the natal chart's Saturn above all, and do not sign what cannot be re-read in sunlight. His shadow work is the same at every scale: addiction, escapism, deception and self-deception, the victim and rescuer careers, are Neptune abused, and the exit from every Neptunian fog, the tradition notes with stern kindness, is labelled Saturn: form, limit, schedule, truth told at the cost of the dream. The two planets are astrology's oldest prescription pair.

The longing and its object

Read deepest, Neptune is the planet of longing itself: the homesickness for a wholeness no address contains, which the mystics call the soul's memory of the sea and the cynics call the marketing department of religion. Astrology declines to arbitrate; it observes that the longing is universal, that Neptune's placement shows where each chart seeks the boundless, and that the seeking ennobles or dissolves depending on what it is aimed at. The composer, the saint, the addict and the con artist share a planet, and the difference between their lives is not the water but the vessel. Every Neptune reading, honestly done, ends at that question, and leaves it, as it should, with the client.
