The zodiac's generating grid

The twelve signs are not twelve arbitrary characters: they are the complete multiplication of two small sets. Four elements, fire, earth, air and water, describe a sign's substance, what kind of stuff its life is made of. Three modes, cardinal, fixed and mutable, describe its motion, how that stuff behaves in time. Four times three is twelve, each combination occurs exactly once, and every sign is fully specified by naming its row and column: Aries is cardinal fire, Taurus fixed earth, Gemini mutable air, and so on around the wheel. Fire: energy and will

Fire is the element of action, spirit and self-assertion. Fire signs, Aries, Leo, Sagittarius, run on enthusiasm and identity; they need to act, to shine, to move toward something, and their crises are crises of momentum and meaning. The three are one flame at three stages: Aries the struck match, cardinal fire that ignites; Leo the hearth, fixed fire that sustains and warms a circle; Sagittarius the beacon, mutable fire that carries light toward a horizon. Fire's gift is courage and vitality; its shadow is burning through people and projects as fuel.

Earth: matter and result

Earth is the element of body, resource and consequence. Earth signs, Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn, trust the tangible: what can be owned, used, perfected, finished. They are the zodiac's builders and keepers, and their crises are crises of security and worth. Taurus is fixed earth, the field that holds and yields; Virgo mutable earth, the workshop where material is sorted and refined; Capricorn cardinal earth, the mountain climbed by structure and time. Earth's gift is reliability and craft; its shadow is materialism and the rut mistaken for a road.

Air: word and relation

Air is the element of mind, language and connection. Air signs, Gemini, Libra, Aquarius, live between: between people, ideas, options, points of view. They are the zodiac's translators, diplomats and theorists, and their crises are crises of decision and detachment. Gemini is mutable air, the breeze that circulates everything; Libra cardinal air, the scale-beam that initiates relation and weighs it; Aquarius fixed air, the jet stream, principle held steady above the weather. Air's gift is perspective and exchange; its shadow is the life discussed rather than lived.

Water: feeling and bond

Water is the element of emotion, memory and merging. Water signs, Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces, know by feeling and bind by caring; boundaries that other elements patrol, water dissolves. They are the zodiac's carers, depth-workers and mystics, and their crises are crises of attachment and overwhelm. Cancer is cardinal water, the tide that reaches and retreats, the harbour that holds; Scorpio fixed water, the deep well, pressure and concentration; Pisces mutable water, the open sea where everything finally mixes. Water's gift is empathy and depth; its shadow is drowning, oneself or others, in feeling.

Cardinal, fixed, mutable: the three motions

The modes are the seasons' internal rhythm, and each contains all four elements once. Cardinal signs, Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn, begin the seasons at the solstices and equinoxes: they initiate, lead and launch, and abandon; their virtue is enterprise, their vice the unfinished. Fixed signs, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius, hold each season's middle: they sustain, concentrate and refuse; their virtue is loyalty and follow-through, their vice the rigidity that outlives its reasons. It is no accident that the four fixed signs, bull, lion, eagle-scorpion, man, are antiquity's four cherub figures, stationed at the wheel's corners. Mutable signs, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces, end the seasons and turn them over: they adapt, translate and disperse; their virtue is versatility, their vice the shape never held. Begin, preserve, hand on: the modes are the grammar of any process, which is why they describe teams and projects as readily as persons.

Polarity, triplicity, quadruplicity

Two further sortings complete the architecture. The polarity alternates the wheel sign by sign: fire and air signs are traditionally masculine, diurnal, outgoing; earth and water signs feminine, nocturnal, receptive, a pairing that underlies the sect doctrine on the Sun's page and the symmetry of rulerships. And the group names matter for reading older books: element groups are the triplicities, three signs in a perfect triangle, which is why trines, linking signs of one element, flow; mode groups are the quadruplicities, four signs in a cross, which is why squares, linking signs of one mode, grind. The aspects, in other words, are this grid read as geometry, and the two pages are one lesson.

Where the grid came from

The four elements are Greek natural philosophy, Empedocles' roots of all things, joined to the Babylonian zodiac when Hellenistic astrology assembled itself; the triangular groupings of signs, though, are already visible in late Babylonian scholarship, and the seasonal logic of the modes is as old as the calendar itself, as the Babylonian pages of this compendium show. Like most of astrology, the grid is a layered artefact: Babylonian bones, Greek philosophy, medieval systematics, modern psychology, each layer preserved because the structure beneath it kept working. Element and mode remain the fastest true things astrology can say about a sign, which is why every sign page in this library opens with them.

How to use this library

Each card above summarises one element, one mode or one sorting; the signs library shows every crossing in the flesh, and the aspects library shows the same grid as geometry. Read a chart's element and mode balance, count where its planets fall, and you have its temperament in miniature before a single placement is interpreted: much fire and little earth acts without building, much water and little air feels without naming.
