Moldavite

What it actually is

A tektite, a natural glass formed by meteorite impact, amorphous, hardness 5.5, brittle, with a distinctive etched surface.

The Ries impact in what is now Bavaria, dated to roughly fifteen million years ago, melted and vaporised surface rock and ejected it. Molten droplets travelled hundreds of kilometres and cooled in flight, landing across Bohemia and Moravia.

Moldavite is not meteorite material. It is terrestrial rock that was melted by an impact, which is a distinction the marketing frequently blurs.

Its characteristic sculpted, wrinkled surface is not from the fall. It developed over millions of years of chemical etching by groundwater in the sediments where the pieces came to rest, and it is the single most useful authenticity feature.

Internal bubbles are elongated and irregular, and lechatelierite inclusions, which are pure silica glass strands, are diagnostic.

Where it comes from

The strewn field covers parts of southern Bohemia and western Moravia in the Czech Republic, principally around Ceske Budejovice and Trebic. The name comes from the Moldau, the German name for the Vltava river.

The material occurs in sediments and is recovered by digging, mostly by small-scale operators. Many localities have been worked out, several are on protected or restricted land, and unauthorised digging is an ongoing legal issue.

Supply has been falling for years while demand has risen sharply, which is the direct cause of the counterfeiting problem.

No other tektite is green in the same way. The other major strewn fields, including the Australasian, Ivory Coast and North American fields, produce dark brown or black tektites.

What the traditions claimed

Moldavite has a genuine but modest local history. Pieces have been found in Palaeolithic and Neolithic contexts in central Europe, and a moldavite was recovered from a site associated with the Venus of Willendorf period, suggesting it was collected and valued.

Bohemian folk tradition treated it as a stone of fertility and of good fortune, and it was given as a betrothal gift in the nineteenth century.

The modern crystal reading is very different and much larger. Moldavite is described in that literature as an intense transformative stone, often with reports of a strong physical sensation on first handling, sometimes called the moldavite flush. That reading and the associated market boom date largely from the late twentieth century and accelerated sharply in the 2010s and 2020s.

Claims linking moldavite to extraterrestrial origin should be qualified: the impactor came from space, the glass is melted terrestrial rock.

How it is worked with

If you own genuine moldavite, the honest thing to work with is what it actually is: local rock that was melted by something arriving from outside and thrown a great distance, then slowly etched by water for fifteen million years.

That is a serviceable image for a sudden external event reshaping something, which is close to what the modern reading describes anyway.

For handling, it is brittle at 5.5 and the etched surface chips and abrades. A wire-wrapped pendant is the usual setting, since faceting destroys the sculpted texture that makes it recognisable.

Faceted moldavite exists and is genuine, but it loses the surface that authenticates it, which is one reason fakes concentrate there.

Buy from a specialist dealer with Czech sourcing, expect to pay real money, and be suspicious of anything cheap.

Buying it honestly

This is the most counterfeited material in the trade, and the fakes have become better as prices have risen.

Green bottle glass is the commonest fake, moulded to imitate the sculpted surface. Moulded texture is repetitive and shallow, and identical pieces indicate a mould. Genuine etching is unique to each piece, deep, and irregular at every scale.

Internal structure is the second test, and it is decisive at ten to twenty times magnification. Real moldavite shows chaotic flow structures, called schlieren, and worm-like threads of lechatelierite, a pure silica glass formed at impact temperatures. Its bubbles are elongated and irregular. Manufactured glass shows uniform internal clarity broken only by perfectly spherical bubbles, with none of the violent internal record an impact leaves.

Colour and clarity: genuine moldavite is a slightly olive-tinged green, often with visible flow structure. Bright even emerald green is a warning.

Price is decisive. Genuine moldavite has become expensive and continues to rise. A large clean piece at a low price is glass, and so are the great majority of pieces sold on general marketplaces.
