What it is and why it feels alive

Amber is the fossilised resin of conifers, most of it from a forest that stood on what is now the Baltic coast around forty-four million years ago. It is not a stone and it is not a mineral. It is organic, it is soft enough to scratch with a knife, it burns with a pine smell, and it floats in strongly salted water.

The property that made it magical is thermal. Amber is a poor conductor, so it does not draw heat out of your hand the way glass and stone do. It feels warm immediately and stays warm, which for an object of that appearance is genuinely uncanny. A great deal of amber's reputation for holding life, sunlight and vitality comes down to that one sensation.

Elektron

Rub amber on wool and it will pick up hair, dust and small pieces of paper. The Greeks called amber elektron, and when William Gilbert coined a Latin term in 1600 for the force that behaved this way, he built it from that word. Electricity is named after amber.

That is not a metaphor or a coincidence dressed up. The static effect was the observed phenomenon, amber was the material it was observed in, and the name followed. For an ancient wearer, an object that visibly attracted things towards itself without touching them was the clearest demonstration of an invisible power available anywhere in the material world, and it is not surprising that it became a charm for drawing things in and holding them.

The Amber Road

Baltic amber travelled south along established routes to the Adriatic and the Mediterranean from the Bronze Age onward, and amber found in Mycenaean graves has been chemically matched to Baltic sources. Pliny records a Roman knight sent north by Nero specifically to procure amber in quantity.

So this is one of the earliest long-distance luxury trades on record, and the material's prestige in the south derives partly from that distance. In the north it was locally abundant, and Baltic and Slavic amuletic use of amber is correspondingly everyday: beads on children, on brides, in graves.

Insects and plant matter trapped in amber were noticed and prized in antiquity too, and they are the reason the material has a scientific significance quite separate from its amuletic one.

The teething necklace, plainly

Baltic amber necklaces are widely sold for teething infants. The stated mechanism is that succinic acid in the amber is released by skin warmth and absorbed transdermally as an analgesic.

This does not hold up. Succinic acid is present in Baltic amber but is not released in meaningful quantity at body temperature, and there is no evidence of transdermal absorption at any useful dose. No controlled trial supports a pain effect.

The risk, by contrast, is real and documented. Paediatric bodies in several countries, including the US Food and Drug Administration, have issued warnings about strangulation and choking from beaded jewellery on infants, and deaths have occurred. This library reports traditions rather than policing them, but a charm with a documented fatality risk and no demonstrated benefit is one where the entry has to say so directly.

Amber as an adult amulet, as a bead, a pendant or a worry-piece, raises none of these problems.

How to test and keep amber

The identification tests are old, simple and still the ones dealers use.

  1. Salt water float: amber floats in a saturated salt solution; glass, most plastics and copal behave differently.
  2. Static: rub it hard on wool and it should pick up a small torn piece of paper.
  3. Warmth: amber is warm and light in the hand. Glass is cold and heavy.
  4. Hot point: a heated needle in an inconspicuous spot gives a pine-resin smell from amber and an acrid chemical one from plastic. This damages the piece.
  5. Acetone: copal, which is young resin rather than true amber, becomes tacky under acetone. Amber does not.
  6. Keep it away from solvents, perfume and prolonged sun, all of which craze the surface.

Pressed amber, made by heating and compressing small fragments, is sold as real amber and technically is. Whether it counts for your purposes is a question to put to the seller before buying.
