The Part of Fortune
The oldest calculated point in continuous use: Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun, reversed for night births. The Part of Fortune projects the relationship of the two lights from the horizon, and the Hellenistic astrologers read the body, livelihood and material luck from it, some techniques counting a second set of houses from its degree. Where the lights' arrangement touches ground: fortune with a formula.

Fortune in ten facets
One lot, read from every side: its formula, its logic, its uses, its family and its modern standing.
The formula
By day: Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun. By night: Ascendant plus Sun minus Moon, the sect reversal most moderns skip and traditionalists insist on. The arc from Sun to Moon, laid off from the horizon: the lights' relationship given a landing place.
The logic of lots
A lot answers a precise question: if the Ascendant is the self, where does the Sun–Moon relationship fall relative to it? Pure arrangement, no body, no ray, and the ancients trusted it because arrangement is what astrology reads everywhere: the lots are the doctrine at its most distilled.
The Lot of the Moon
The ancients called Fortune the lot of the Moon: lunar matters, body, health, livelihood, the goods of physical life, located by formula. Its twin, the Lot of Spirit (ASC+Sun−Moon by day), handled the solar side: action, career, the deliberate life. Body's luck and will's, paired.
Houses from Fortune
Hellenistic technique counted a full set of houses from Fortune's degree as a second Ascendant: the eleventh from Fortune, the 'place of acquisition', read for gain, remains the famous one. The chart's material life gets its own wheel, hung from the lights' arrangement.
Fortune by sign and house
Fortune's house is where circumstance tends to favour: the arena where things fall right without being forced. Its sign styles the fortune; its ruler's condition qualifies everything, a well-placed lord of Fortune was the old astrology's quiet marker of a provided-for life.
Planets with Fortune
Benefics conjunct or regarding Fortune bless the body and means, Jupiter there was proverbial for prosperity; malefics tax them, Saturn's Fortune earns slowly, Mars's spends in crises. The lot takes company seriously: it is a place, and places have neighbours.
The Arabic Parts family
Medieval Arabic astrology multiplied the lots into a library: Parts of marriage, children, illness, travel, each projecting some pair's arc from the horizon. Most are specialist tools now; Fortune and Spirit remain the working pair, the family's founders and its survivors.
Eclipse and revival
Modern astrology kept Fortune as a lucky-spot curio while the technique around it slept; the Hellenistic revival restored the sect reversal, the Spirit twin, and the houses-from-Fortune methods. The lot is now the clearest beneficiary of traditional astrology's return.
Fortune in time
Transits to Fortune mark seasons of material weather, benefics visiting the lot were classic windfall timing, and the revived technique of zodiacal releasing from Fortune (or Spirit) divides whole lives into chapters of fortune and action, the lots as the spine of Hellenistic time-lords.
The working vocabulary
Embodied luck, livelihood, the provided-for place, the lights' landing point, acquisition. Well-placed: circumstance as ally. Afflicted: the leaky purse, fortune that needs guarding. The point that answers: where does life tend to provide for you, and through what?
The lot of the Moon
The Part of Fortune is the oldest calculated point in continuous astrological use: the chief of the Hellenistic lots, computed as Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun for day births and reversed by night, the arc between the two lights laid off from the horizon. The ancients called it the Lot of the Moon and read from it the lunar goods of life, body, health, livelihood, material fortune: where the arrangement of Sun, Moon and horizon touches ground as circumstance. It is meaning derived from pure configuration, no body, no ray, which makes it the distilled case of what astrology does everywhere, and the strongest historical answer to the suspicion that calculated points are a modern indulgence: the tradition's most rigorous era built whole techniques on this one.
The formula and its reversal
By day, Fortune is Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun; by night, Ascendant plus Sun minus Moon, and the reversal is not pedantry but the lot's own logic. The formula projects the arc from the sect light to its companion: by day, from Sun to Moon; by night, from Moon to Sun, so that Fortune always measures the same relationship, the luminary of the time handing off to its partner, landed from the horizon. Modern software long defaulted to the day formula for all births, and much twentieth-century writing followed; the Hellenistic revival restored the sect reversal, and practitioners who adopt it report the night-birth Fortune landing with noticeably better sense, as the restored techniques would predict.
Fortune and Spirit: the working pair
Fortune's twin completes its meaning. The Lot of Spirit, computed with the lights exchanged, ASC plus Sun minus Moon by day, carries the solar side of the ledger: action, intention, career, the deliberate life, as Fortune carries the lunar side: body, circumstance, livelihood, the life that happens to one. The pair maps the oldest distinction in the tradition, what you do and what befalls you, onto two calculable degrees, and Hellenistic practice used them in tandem: Fortune for the material and bodily questions, Spirit for the vocational and willed, with the lots of Eros, Necessity and the rest filling specialist niches. The medieval Arabic astrologers multiplied the family into dozens of Parts, of marriage, children, illness, travel, most now specialist tools; Fortune and Spirit remain the founders and the survivors.
The techniques: houses, company, releasing
The lot's power in practice comes from the techniques hung on it. Hellenistic astrology counted a second set of houses from Fortune's degree, reading the material life on its own wheel: the eleventh from Fortune, the 'place of acquisition', was the classic site for judging gain, and remains the technique's famous survivor. Fortune's company is read like any place's: benefics conjunct or aspecting it bless the body and means, Jupiter with Fortune was proverbial prosperity, while malefics tax them, Saturn earning slowly, Mars spending in crises, and its ruler's condition qualifies everything: a well-dignified lord of Fortune was the quiet classical marker of a provided-for life. And the revived time-lord technique of zodiacal releasing, run from Spirit for the career or Fortune for the body and fortunes, divides whole lives into chapters from these degrees: the lots as the spine of Hellenistic timing, restored to working order after a long sleep.
Reading Fortune today
The modern reading, informed by the revival, runs so: Fortune's house is where circumstance tends to favour, the arena where things fall right without forcing, the chart's provided-for place; its sign styles the provision; its ruler and company qualify it; and transits to it, benefic visits especially, time the material weather. The point asks a gentler question than most, where does life provide for you, and through what?, and its answers are among the chart's most cheering. The old caution completes the picture: Fortune describes what befalls, not what is earned, its luck is the kind found rather than made, and the lot's best use, then as now, is knowing where to stand.
