The house of allies

The eleventh house governs the chosen company: friends and allies, groups, circles, societies and patrons, the people bound to you by goodwill rather than blood, romance or contract, together with hopes and aspirations, the wished-for future, and the gains that follow position. Its topics cohere around a single insight the ancients stated as doctrine and the moderns as sociology: futures are built in company, and the quality of a life's alliances is among the largest facts about it. The ancients named the house Good Spirit and gave it Jupiter's joy; between the name and the tenant, no house on the wheel has better credentials.

Good Spirit and Jupiter's joy

The Hellenistic name is agathos daimon, the Good Spirit, the benevolent genius that attends a life, paired across the wheel with the fifth's Good Fortune: the soul's good luck beside the body's. The scheme of joys completes the endowment by seating Jupiter here: the greater benefic at home in the house of allies and hopes, generosity among the generous. The doctrines together define the house's mechanism, help that arrives unforced, the favour freely done, patronage, sponsorship, the door opened by someone who simply wishes you well, and they explain the old observation that benefics in the eleventh bless careers that malefics at the Midheaven cannot ruin: the network outlasts the noon.

Friendship: the unshared house

The tradition's taxonomy of bonds gives each its address, kin to the third and fourth, romance to the fifth, the contracted partner to the seventh, and reserves the eleventh for the bond that is none of these: friendship, alliance by pure affinity, chosen and revocable, owed nothing and giving anyway. Jyotisha's eleventh, labha bhava, the house of gains, holds income, profits, the fulfilment of desires and elder siblings, and carries a doctrine unique on the wheel: it is the best of the upachayas, the growing houses, and every planet, benefic or malefic, is traditionally said to give well here in the end. The malefic that afflicts elsewhere pays out in the eleventh; the house where even Saturn writes cheques. The generosity of the Vedic reading matches the Hellenistic endowments precisely, Good Spirit, Jupiter's joy, the gains of position, and makes the eleventh, across traditions, the wheel's most reliably fortunate address after the ninth.

The axis with the fifth
